Jaymiel, Cherub Archangel of Mending
The world is … aha! I knew it. Somebody wasn't paying attention when they were installing this pipe. Didn't use good materials either… sweet Maker, didn't anyone around here do even rudimentary maintenance? Be a dear and pass me the duct tape. Marvelous stuff: would you believe it only took me twenty years to get Jean to release it to humanity?
Now, that'll hold the leak until I shut off the pressure. Mind the stream… never mind. There should be a clean rag over there. Just be glad I'm not checking the sewage lines. Now, let's just see what's blocking the intake valves, shall we?
A feather. Why am I not surprised? Tell me, am I going insane, or is there not a clear, legible sign on the wall saying "Clean trap once per week"? I swear, sometimes I wonder about some of my colleagues' Servitors. They may be another Uriel when it comes to flaming swords, but the only one I ever saw who could cope with a broom was one of Eli's Malakim. And even then, he couldn't be bothered to actually use it for sweeping… I'm sorry, what were you saying?
The world? The world is bloody lucky to have lasted this long, what with all these ham-handed celestials breaking things. I'm going to put THAT to a stop, if it's the last thing I ever do.
Jaymiel's a working Superior: this has been clear straight from the start, when the ritual elevating her to Archangel status had to be delayed until she could be located and almost physically dragged from a tricky repair job. She's a new Archangel, but already legendary for her utter disdain for ostentation (whether it be in her manner or her dress). Whether in corporeal form (fairly young human female) or celestial (winged panda bear), Jaymiel is invariably garbed in the same shapeless, grease-stained, comfortable coveralls that she wore as one of Jean's Servitors. The only noticeable change is that the coveralls no longer smell.
Dissonance
Servitors of Mending suffer dissonance whenever they cause a problem (not just physical) and let it go unfixed. They also suffer dissonance if they ignore a problem completely without trying to fix it.
Organization
Jaymiel's Servitors have three things in common: they're all expert mechanics, technicians and/or engineers, they all grumble incessantly about the insane workload that their insane Superior inflicts upon them, and they all will jump through hoops for her at even the suggestion that she might appreciate it. The workload is very high, especially since her organization is growing, but she works harder then any of her angels, and they all know it. They also know that she's not too proud to get her hands dirty, which is more than you can say about some Superiors or even Word-Bound…
Her Servitors don't have too formal a hierarchy. The standard practice is for angels to either receive solo assignments (most major Tethers either have someone from Mending on staff, or are constantly petitioning for one), or else be grouped and utilized as specialists in one particular field. There isn't a rigorous chain of command: Jaymiel respects her Servitors enough to let them do their jobs without too much interference. Unfortunately, this lack of interference also means that Servitors of Mending sometimes also have a lack of backup. Time will tell if their Superior will do a reorganization.
Choir Attunements
All Servitors of Mending must have at least one skill/3 that relates to repairing, engineering, healing, etc. This is paid for normally.
Seraphim
Seraphim of Mending always know the most efficient way to repair a broken device. Of course, the most efficient way may be beyond the Seraph's technical ability.
Cherubim
A Cherub of Mending retains a limited attunement to anything she fixes, for one week. During that time, she can make a resonance roll at -2, with normal results. However, if the device is broken, she will not suffer dissonance unless the Cherub has also attuned to the object normally.
Ofanim
An Ofanite, when faced with a broken device, automatically knows where to find the most appropriate set of tools to fix it within a one-mile radius.
Elohim
Powers of Mending recognize sabotage at a glance. If confronted with a sabotaged piece of equipment, the Elohite may also recognize the saboteur, if she encounters him or her within the next 24 hours and makes a Perception roll.
Malakim (Restricted)
The angel may attune any device towards honor. For the next week, any honorable human (as defined by the Malakite) will gain a +2 to his or her check digits to use or repair the device, while dishonorable humans (again, as defined by the Malakite) will suffer a -3. Mass use of this resonance costs 1 Essence for every two extra devices so attuned. These Malakim love weapon caches…
Bright Lilim (Restricted)
Jaymiel would like more Bright Lilim, actually: their ability to detect Needs would be a welcome addition for troubleshooting teams. The few she's managed to scrounge up all have the Vassal of Tinkering Distinction: also, human mechanics and technicians react to them at +2.
Kyriotates (Restricted)
A Kyriotate of Mending can automatically possess the nearest uninjured person to an accident, disaster or equipment failure: roll for the check digit, but the possession only lasts for (CD) hours, not days. Jaymiel will also allow her Kyriotates (especially those in solo assignments) to "tie up" 5 of their Forces in a standard human vessel, if desired.
Mercurians
These angels fix organic things rather than mechanic ones: they excel at physical, mental and emotional repair work, getting a +3 to their check digits whenever they have to heal a living creature.
Servitor Attunements
Trouble Brewing
This Attunement will allow the angel to detect Calabim with a Perception roll. Range is (Celestial Forces x 10) yards. The Calabite will not know that he has been detected, unless the angel rolls an Infernal Intervention.
If It Ain't Broke…
Angels with this Attunement may, at the cost of 4 Essence, make a particular piece of working machinery effectively invisible to the curious. Anyone else wanting to fiddle with, upgrade or even do routine maintenance on the device must make a Will roll at -3, or else leave it strictly alone. Once someone makes their Will roll (or if the machine actually breaks down), the benefit disappears. The angel may add a further -1 to the Will roll for every 1 Essence spent.
Distinctions
Vassal of Tinkering
The angel gets +2 to any attempt to repair or diagnose a broken piece of machinery. This will not work on any type of relic (even corporeal), however.
Friend of Doing It Yourself
The angel can find spare parts anywhere, anytime. The parts may not be perfect, but they'll work.
Master of Forms
Masters of Forms can repair broken devices with nothing more than Essence, creating missing parts out of nothing (note that a drained battery or a gun without ammunition is not 'broken'). Costs are 1 Essence for every 5 lb. of replacement parts or 1 Essence for every 2 lb. for a temporary (one hour) repair. Anyone with Symphonic Awareness will automatically detect this effect, although they may not know its cause.
Relations
Jaymiel isn't keen on politics. She doesn't actually dislike anyone, though she can get annoyed at fellow Archangels who fail to clean up after themselves. The Archangel of Mending is considered a minor Superior, but most of her colleagues don't go out of their way to antagonize her. It's not that the older Archangels are technophobes, mind, it's just that human technology changes so blessed quickly these days, and having her around and friendly means that you don't have to worry about personally keeping up with every little upgrade.
Her voting tends to mirror that of Jean's, although they disagree a bit on how much tech to let slip to humans. She often also supports the peace faction, but that's mostly because they tend not to unnecessarily smash things as much.
Allied: Eli, Jean
Associated: David, Marc, Yves
Neutral: All others
Hostile: None (Janus, Jordi are Hostile to Jaymiel)
Blandine: "We travel in different planes. Some of her angels are quite helpful, however." "What she said. She's good at her job, and doesn't need my help, much. Good thing, too: working in the Marches can be disconcerting."
David: "It's better if you don't let things break in the first place. However, having someone who can pick up the pieces and make things stronger than what they were before is always appreciated." "For an angel who likes things strong, he has to be prodded a bit to do preventive maintenance. Luckily, he's got a lot of restraint and keeps the incidental damage down. That's worth a lot."
Dominic: "Her Servitors don't cause trouble. Except for her relationship with Eli, neither does she. What else is there to say?" "Dominique's another one of those who doesn't make extra work for me, and sweet Maker of All knows she understands what it's like to have no free time. Still, I'm not thrilled about some of her pet causes. It's not bad enough yet for me to start doing anything about it, but I'm starting to think that it will be, soon."
Eli: "Jaymiel gets the point of it all, though she doesn't approach things the way I do. I couldn't be prouder of the way she turned out… well, anyway. Smart, too: did I mention how smart she is? Smart as a whip, that one is. You know, I have a few photos of her as a reliever around here somewhere…" "Without his Word, what point to mine? I understand what he's trying to accomplish, too: unfortunately, I can't foster Mending in the same way that he can foster Creation. But he hasn't abandoned his duty. Anyone else, but never him."
Gabriel: "She banks her Fire, letting it warm instead of consume. We do not agree on some things, but she cannot abide Cruelty, in her own way." "It's hard for me to meet her: every atom of her body screams out for someone, anyone, to Mend her agony, and I can't do it. If certain others around here absolutely must blow things up on a regular basis, could they at least be constructive about it? Doesn't anybody else get a headache from just seeing the damage that's inflicted on Gabriel every second of her existence?"
Janus: "Sometimes things have to be broken before you can get real change. I'm sorry if it bothers her, but that's existence for you." "I'm not inflexible: evil is broken to begin with, and you Mend it by removing it. Sometimes that means an inelegant solution. I just wish that Janus and his crew would at least try to Mend all the fallout that accompanies their rough surgery, instead of storming away at the first opportunity."
Jean: "Jaymiel was an efficient Servitor, with a useful habit of providing alternate viewpoints. Her record as an Archangel has shown that her abilities have continued to improve. All in all, I see no reason not to state that, objectively speaking, she has proven to be a quite creditable asset to Heaven. Her intellectual abilities are also noticeably higher than average, I might add. Permit me to provide a chronological series of test scores that will substantiate this assertion…" "Learned a lot from him, too. I may not agree with his assumptions about humanity, mind, but he's one of the two angels out there who taught me the meanings of duty and responsibility. I'll make him proud of me. Even if he can never show it."
Jordi: "She's a little better than her old mentor, but she's still obsessed with gears and machines and wires. If she's wise, Jaymiel will abandon those things and concentrate on healing. That's what's important, in the end." "I would offer to help him Mend his private hurt, but he doesn't want that. I think that the pain has gotten good to him. In some ways, he's Heaven's greatest failure."
Khalid: "She and I only meet in the human heart. She treats Faith as a tool, yes, but as an honorable and powerful tool, eminently suited for bringing a soul peace. Otherwise, she leaves me to my task, and I return the courtesy." "He's doing a decent job Mending on his own, and I never interfere with things when it isn't necessary. If he needs help, I'm sure that he'll come out and ask."
Laurence: "I was skeptical at first, but it really does seem that an Archangel tasked with repairing the War's infrastructure was necessary. (uncomfortable look) Especially on Earth: we've apparently let maintenance slip somewhat down there, which Jaymiel has been so good to point out. Over and over and over again." "Laurence leads the Host, and he's probably the best one for the task. I don't want his job, and I know he doesn't want mine. As long as I don't push things too often, there isn't too much friction."
Marc: "I've had almost no problems doing business with her, and when she fixes something, by God it stays fixed. She'll need to start learning how to delegate soon, but then we all go through that stage. She's well worth keeping happy." "He's got his eye on the bottom line, all the time. Thankfully: Marc understands the concept of "penny wise and pound foolish" better than anyone else on the Council does, and his ability to plan for the long term is stellar. If I can convince him that something absolutely needs to be done, well, it's uncanny how quickly the rest of our peers will fall into place. The converse of this is, I shouldn't bother him with trivia. It's a fair deal."
Michael: "She's had the nerve to get in my face several times, usually when our Words collide. I respect that: besides, good technicians are worth their weight in plastic explosive. Jaymiel can be reasoned with, though, and it doesn't take too much to keep her quiet. She can be a useful go-between, at times." "Michael can get me worked up more than anybody else I know. The casual destruction that accompanies one of his escapades, or that of his Servitors, is frightening. However, if you stand up to him and explain that he can't just expect to smash things without at least a legitimate attempt to make things right afterwards, he'll usually get the point. It's just a case of speaking calmly, rationally and at the top of your voice. But that grin of his, even when he's complying…"
Novalis: "We want the same things, in the end. Having another Superior dedicated to healing is a good thing, even if she's more interested in fixing gadgets than hearts. Unfortunately, Jaymiel's is much more tolerant than I am when it comes to violent attacks on evil. It's about the only way that you can tell how young she is." "If Novalis wasn't around, I'd have to expand my purpose to include healing humanity. Novalis is around, and she does her job thoroughly and well, and I don't interfere with experts. I do keep my hand in, of course: you never know when you might need in-house support. As for my personal attitude towards her, well, moral courage is always impressive. I hope that I would display the same courage of my convictions, if in her place. I don't fully agree with her beliefs, but I respect them highly."
Yves: "I see so many new angels. Would that they all turn out so brightly as her." "The touchstone, the standard, for the rest of us. Even if you can't get a straight answer from him, no matter how prettily you try to wheedle one out."
Role in the War
Jaymiel's major task is to clean up after the War. A lot of damage can get inflicted when angel and demon meet, and her Servitors tend to be on the scene before the dust settles. Minimizing the damage is usually the best a Servitor of Mending can hope to accomplish, unfortunately: there's usually not enough time to do anything else. Their Archangel understands this, and constantly pushes to cut down on the most egregious examples of wanton destruction. Of course, she has no direct control over Infernals, but word's getting out on the street that sticking around when her clean-up squads show up isn't particularly bright.
Jaymiel also tasks her Servitors with maintenance projects. Making sure things are working properly is the best way to cut down on repairs, after all. A Servitor assigned to keep something running will defend it to the death (preferably someone else's death), which incidentally makes them stellar combat engineers. On those rare occasions when the War takes on a military aspect, there's usually a contingent of Mending on hand. Their Archangel allows this, as this way she can at least partially control the aftereffects.
Rites:
: Successfully repairing a broken device, or providing first aid.
: Helping a person achieve some kind of mental or emotional healing.
Chance of Invocation: 3
Modifiers:
+1 A home repair book
+2 A set of tools that have been steadily used to fix things for at least ten years
+3 A class of more than thirty people learning mechanics or first aid
+4 A person who has made a full recovery from a crippling ailment, or anything mechanical that has been repaired with loving care
+5 The prevention of a major disaster through dedicated and inspired repair work (stopping a nuclear meltdown would do, or the successful recovery of a malfunctioning spacecraft)
+6 The moment that someone is brought back from the dead by corporeal means (the angel cannot have caused the death, and can only be the resuscitator if his or her Role permits)
Personality
Jaymiel is a pretty good example of a Cherub: focussed, solicitous of her charges, and prone to careful planning. Her responsibilities neatly dovetail with her nature, and there's little question but that so far she's been up to the challenge. She's no doubt helped by her generally sunny nature.
She's got her quirks, of course. First and foremost, she's young, young, young for an Archangel, being barely three centuries old. Jaymiel was always a fiercely energetic angel, combining natural ability with an iron-hard work ethic to get where she is today, and she still remains a fairly "hands-on" type. Like most prodigies, she can sometimes forget that things obvious to her aren't necessarily obvious to everybody else, which means that she's got to keep a grip on her temper.
Really, in many ways Jaymiel doesn't act like a Superior: although she runs a taut ship, she doesn't give the impression of cool aloofness that most Archangels assume. While a mere Word-bound, Jaymiel of course had a group of friends, and one of the most amazing things about her is that she's managed to keep them with a minimum of awkwardness all around.
And then there's Francis. Francis is an easygoing Mercurian of Creation who has seemingly accepted the fact that his longtime companion is now one of the Powers That Be, not the cheerful Servitor of Lightning that he met and wooed a century ago. He keeps out of her "other stuff" and hangs around her Principality, ducking down to Earth whenever he feels the need to serve Heaven in his own way. This can drive Jaymiel insane with worry, of course: there are reasons why Superiors on both sides don't have lovers, and Francis is at risk every second that he's on the corporeal plane. She handles it by making sure that some extremely powerful Cherubs of Mending (formerly of Protection) are keeping an eye on him at all times: luckily, he doesn't seem to mind. The Council has raised eyebrows at this, but he isn't incompetent - just not a Superior - and Francis does seem to have an uncanny knack at finding Eli (and doesn’t mind passing along messages to his beloved boss).
He remains a weak spot in Jaymiel's armor, however, and one that a demon might exploit. A particularly stupid demon, granted, but that would be cold comfort if Francis dies. Or Fall, which would be worse.
History
As noted above, Jaymiel's personal life isn't exactly normal. Then again, neither was her upbringing: the Archangel of Mending has always been on the fast track, even when just a reliever, and it shows.
Jaymiel started off existence as a reliever, a helpful aide and messenger for those angels in the Halls of Creation. Eli was a relaxed type even before his walkabout, and he enjoyed getting to know those who worked for him: he took a liking to Jaymiel, and kept a close eye on her progress.
However, even from the start Jaymiel showed a slightly different interest in Eli's Word: while the others were content to just make things, she wanted to know why things worked, and how to keep them working, and (most importantly) how to get broken things to work again. Her Archangel, noting this, started using Jaymiel as a courier for his correspondence with Jean. After all, if she'd be happier working for Lightning, best that she find it out early.
Jean immediately caught on to this. A discreet call confirmed his suspicions (it never occurred to Jaymiel that an Archangel didn't exactly need her - or anybody else - to deliver his messages), and the Archangel of Lightning found the reliever to be an extremely attentive and respectful student. Firmly loyal to Eli at all times, of course, but endlessly fascinated with all the neat stuff lying around Jean's workshop (Jean had gotten into the habit of "making her wait" for a reply while he experimented). To this day, Jaymiel still hasn't realized that Jean doesn't actually habitually talk to himself, either. Then it was back to the Halls of Creation, where she would try out the things that she had so sneakily "overheard" from Jean, until the next time that she had to go deliver the mail.
All in all, Jaymiel had a fantastic "childhood".
Alas, all things come to an end, and Jaymiel eventually fledged as a Cherub. She did good work at the Halls of Creation, of course, work she loved, but as time went on Jaymiel came to realize that she could do more under Jean's tutelage. Getting up the courage to tell Eli that she wanted to switch Superiors was the hardest part: after all, one could say that she took shameless advantage of her Archangel's patronage and instruction to further herself. Eli would have every right to be angry.
Eli instead laughed uproariously, told her that if she wanted to see him angry, all she had to do was never visit, and sent Jaymiel on her way with a final message and a kiss on her cheek. She never saw his sad but proud smile after she left.
Life in the Halls of Progress was good. Jean personally assigned her to engineering work, refining prototypes and designs. Jaymiel found that she had a knack for fixing gadgets, and quickly gravitated towards maintenance and repair. During this time, of course, she kept up with her old friends in Creation, eventually even falling in love with one of them (the aforementioned Francis). Her unique upbringing made her a shoo-in for the Word of Mending when the old holder of the Word was slain. By the beginning of the current century, Jaymiel was certain that she had arrived in her proper place: good job, good lover, good friends. She was content.
Then they had to go and make her an Archangel.
It was a complete surprise. Eli and Jean had cooked it up between them, and somehow neglected to mention to her that she was a candidate for promotion. Jaymiel was fixing the electrical wiring of a Tether to Stone when three grinning Malakim of Creation grabbed her, bustled her up to Heaven despite all protestations, and brought her into the Seraphim Council, still wearing her lucky coveralls. Before she knew it, she was one of the great ones.
She's determined not to let it ruin her life. Things were awkward with her friends and boyfriend for a while, until they all managed to work out the altered social dynamic, but Jaymiel stays closer to her roots than any other Superior does. She has no intention of ever, ever letting that change. It's probably a forlorn hope, but for right now Jaymiel has the enthusiasm and the burning desire for improvement that categorizes the young.
One other thing: Jaymiel loves both of her mentors dearly. She respects and understands them completely, and will do anything to repay their kindness.
But she's going to get back at them really good, one of these days…
