Mark Lee Custom Frames is a one person custom frame shop. I personally design and build each frame which has my name on it. Each frame is built one at a time on a Henry James frame jig. I spend between 30 - 40 hours on every frame. After the frame is built and the finish work complete, I send the frames out to one of two painters: Joe Bell or Randy's Designs.
Specialties include designing frames to perform the way the CUSTOMER wants it to. I will select individual tubes from the finest steel tubing companies to tailor a tubeset to your individual needs. I have no stock frames. Every frame I make is unique and one of a kind and designed around the customer. The geometry is based on Fit Kit numbers obtained by your local pro shop. I use the numbers as a starting point and tweak the final geometry according to your needs. This is crucial to providing you with the best fitting bike possible. Arrangements can be made if you can't find a shop who has Fit Kit services. Triathlon frames based on 650 wheels, aerodynamic tube profiles, steeper seat angles and aerobar use are also a specialty of mine. Fillet Brazing is my preferred method of joining the tubes. Not only are the joints smooth and graceful, they are also incredably strong and reliable. The smooth radius of the fillets provide a gradual transition at the joints. This helps to distribute the mechanical stresses more evenly. It's the perfect balance of strength, mechanical performance and seamless beauty.
Steel Tubing is the only material I use. It provides the widest range of individual tubes and performance characteristics possible. It is also the most repairable in the event of a crash. With the new breed of steel alloy tubing, perfomance is as good or better than new 'exotic' materials. These new high-strength, thin-walled tubes make it possible to enjoy the trademark 'lively' feel of a steel frame without the added weight of older steel frames. Frames I've built have weighed as little as- 3.0 lbs. for a 54cm Road Frame 4.0 lbs. for a 60cm Road Frame with Oversized tubes and ovalized seat tube and chainstays. 3.7 lbs. for a 54cm Triathlon frame with Oversized tubes and an Aero down tube.
