The Pirate Affair
The Pirate Affair

by author22@aol.com.

Rated "R" by the author. Pirate Adventure, ghosts, and lots of bawdy comedy characterize this story, which was strongly influenced by the writings of Thorne Smith (Topper) — but first and foremost it is a thrilling adventure story set in the 18th century. Real-life pirates, including Blackbeard, Mary Read and Anne Bonny, make an appearance, but the two central characters are ghosts — one a teenage boy hustler and the other a lesbian.

Rum, Sodomy and the Lash: Piracy, Sexuality, and Masculine Identity
by Hans Turley.

Turley gives us the pirate tradition in a refreshingly vivid and informed historical frame. He does not, as some recent pop philosophers have, merely appropriate this complicated and obscure realm of masculinity to posit as some kind of ahistorical arcadia. Instead, peppering his account with the thrilling vocabulary of original pirate narratives, Turley brilliantly offers the pirate example as a prism through which our current agonizing over narrative and gender can be usefully refracted. Scholarhship this lively, impassioned, and deeply informed is all too rare.
