Ferrari

No one knows the exact reason why Ferrari built the 288 GTO, but it could have been created as a potential competitor in the Group B class. Rally-prepared versions of the 308 had been fairly successful earlier in the 1980s on tarmac events, and it's possible Ferrari would have liked to challenge the other rally teams on tarmac rallies. Ferrari did go on to build four 288 GTO "Evoluzione" models, which looked very aggressive and had about 650 horsepower. When Group B was banned in 1986, Ferrari cut the power of the Evoluzione back to "only" 450. This could have been a sign of Ferrari's intentions. It's a shame that we didn't get to see this car in rally action, because it would have been very spectacular to watch. Had Ferrari entered the class, rallying popularity worldwide would have skyrocketed.
