HANSON
One of the most non-threatening groups in pop history, Hanson, is causing legal trouble for online music service MP3.com.
Isaac, Taylor and Zac Hanson have filed suit, alleging the Web site allowed illegal access to their songs. They are seeking an injunction against the San Diego-based company and seeking damages of $150,000 per infringed song.
Singer-songwriter Tom Waits and Oscar-winning pop composer Randy Newman both sued MP3.com in May, and more than 50 songwriters and music publishers demanded royalties and an injunction against the site in August.
Hanson came to fame in 1997 with the upbeat song "MMMBop" when they were 16, 14 and 11 years old, respectively.

TOM WAITS
Tom Waits has two entirely separate albums due out on April 9, 2002 (on Anti/Epitaph Records). Both were written and produced by Waits and Kathleen Brennan, his wife and long-time collaborator. They're currently in the studio putting the finishing touches upon each.
The first CD, titled "Alice," is described as containing "dark tunes from an adult fairytale." The songs on the second CD, titled "Red Drum," were inspired by the dark tale of Woyzeck -- a poor soldier driven mad by medical experiments and an unfaithful wife.
Each album was recorded chiefly using acoustic instruments.

JOHNNY CASH
For some time, country icon Johnny Cash has suffered from a condition called autonomic neuropathy. The ailment makes him very susceptible to getting pneumonia and related conditions. Because of that situation, his doctors have admitted the 69-year-old singer-songwriter to a Nashville hospital. The official diagnosis is bronchitis.
Doctors at Baptist Hospital say Cash has been hospitalized several times in recent years with pneumonia. His manager tells the Tennessean newspaper that "it doesn't look serious." Because of his condition, though, doctors decided it was best to keep him in a hospital and not at home in case his condition worsened.

DOLLY PARTON
Dolly Parton says she will stage a "Red, White and Bluegrass" benefit on New Year's Eve. Parton's publicist says the show will raise money to provide scholarships for the children of victims of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
The singer/songwriter told a Nashville news conference that she "wants to show my true colors -- red, white and blue, by being a good American and a good Samaritan." Parton says she plans a huge event and will soon announce the names of other participants.
By the way, the scholarship fund to which Parton wants to contribute is headed by Bill Clinton and Bob Dole and has pledged to raise at least $100 million in the next few months.

The lead singer of the Chi-Lites has been sentenced to one year and a day in prison for his role in a bribery scheme that sold Dixmoor (Ill.) Park District police badges to businessmen.

KEVIN SPACEY: ACTOR AND SINGER?
Could Kevin Spacey some day place a Grammy next to the two Oscars in his trophy case?
Eight-time Grammy-winning producer Phil Ramone told gossip columnist Mitchell Fink he's been wanting to make an album with Spacey since even before the star of "American Beauty" and the new movie "K-PAX" stunned the audience by singing "Mind Games" on the John Lennon tribute show at Radio City Music Hall earlier this month.
Ramone said he heard Spacey sing "Bridge Over Troubled Water" on Sept. 10 during a warm-up for the Latin Grammy Awards.
"Kevin is Julliard-trained, and he can definitely sing," said Ramone. "For now, we're just talking."
Ramone won album of the year Grammys for producing Paul Simon's "Still Crazy After All These Years" (1975) and Billy Joel's "52nd Street" (1979). He won the Grammy for record of the year for Joel's "Just the Way You Are" in 1978.

ANTHRAX (THE BAND)
Visitors to www.anthrax.com can find information about the deadly bacteria -- but not because the Web site was set up for health reasons. It's the home page of the veteran heavy metal band Anthrax, which says it won't change its name after using it for nearly two decades.
"People ask me how I feel about this," writes singer Scott Ian on the site. "It sucks. I'm scared. Confused. Stressed. I'm sad that we live in a world where humans would do this to each other. When I learned about anthrax 20 years ago there was never any thought or talk about bio-warfare. ... I just wish this would go away. I would feel the same even if my band weren't called Anthrax."
The site offers facts about the disease, links to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and news reports about the current outbreaks. There's also an official news release titled &
