Question: If I understand correctly, the men of PR 26 were
stationed at Atsugi, but would fly to Danang. Would they stay in
Danang and do missions from there or was this one of the stops on a series
of stops?
Answer: Both. Danang was a deployment site for VQ-1 just
as aircraft carriers are deployment sites for 'tail hook' aircraft.
Late 60's, deployments were 10-20 days and got longer as the years moved
on. After returning to Atsugi, we'd return in 10-20 days to Danang.
For about 2yrs, I deployed with crews about every 2-3 weeks.
Question: Would some remain at Danang while the others went out
on a mission? Are these things that can be told?
Answer: Both the EP-3B and EC-121 aircraft crews deployed
with 2-3 trainee aircrewman (normally AT's) and 2-3 'ground pounders' (AE,
ADR, AM). Rotation of the operators was 'normal ops'. Missions
were flown Danang-Danang, Danang-PI, Danang-Thailand(Korat), Danang-Saigon,
(and in reverse route) or whatever was requirement of the day but
most were Danang-Danang. Crews flew whatever was assigned for aircraft
type. The 'Whale' and EP-3 crews could make the 'hump' to Thailand
if needed but the 'Willy' crews sometimes had to fill 11-12 hours
'on station' time for their 'buddies' to 'rest' in Thailand for next flight.
Between the 3 aircraft type, VQ-1 crews provided 24hr/7day coverage.
EA-3 crews were usually the 'filler' and short notice launches if a 'big
bird' had problems in-flight. I crewed on the EP-3Bs and was always
in awe of my EA-3 Whale buddies. What magnificent aircraft
we flew as a squadron. I returned for more twice.
