WILSON'S MESSAGE TO FANS

Kevin Wilson has today issued a call for Cobblers fans to fill Sixfields on Saturday afternoon when the Town take on Rotherham. Defender Sampson has backed the call:"I’d like to appeal to everyone reading this with the interests of Northampton Town at heart to get down to Sixfields on Saturday to support the team. The support we have had from the fans who have turned out this season has been fantastic but one thing that has been disappointing is that our last few home crowds have been around the 5,500 mark. We are playing some open, attractive, exciting football and winning matches yet the last time we were in Division 2 we were struggling to score goals and win games but the average gate was over 6,000. The bottom line is that with the results we have been getting and the performances we have been turning in we had hoped to be getting regular 6,000+ gates at Sixfields. Please come down and support us on Saturday, and bring a friend or a relative to help boost the numbers."

CHANCE TO APPEAR ON THE BOX

News direct from the club: "Northampton Town Football Club are offering all supporters the chance to become a TV star next week! Nationwide Building Society, the main sponsor of both Northampton Town and the England national team, are at Sixfields next Monday and Tuesday (18th and 19th) filming a whole host of new TV advertisements, to be played at the beginning and end of all ad breaks on ITV and Sky Sports coverage of Nationwide League matches and England internationals. Filming takes place at Sixfields all day on Monday and Tuesday and anyone who would like to be part of a crowd scene is welcome to attend although we would ask all supporters to bear in mind that only limited numbers can be included and there could be long periods of waiting around. We would emphasise that attendance is at supporters own risk and they may be turned away if excessive numbers are on site but with this in mind supporters who want to take part or just to watch the filming are welcome to attend, especially wearing their Cobblers shirts!"

WILSON HAPPY WITH FULHAM PERFORMANCE

Cobblers manager Kevin Wilson yesterday praised his side for their effort and commitment in the Worthington Cup Round 1 defeat at Fulham on Tuesday. "I could not have asked for any more. The performance at Fulham was a lot better than at Wycombe or Bury. We showed more passion and more desire. A couple of critical decisions went against us but I don't want to go in to that. Ian Sampson and David Savage both came through Ok last night after injury and I am hopeful that John Frain and Chris Hargreaves might be back for Saturday. Richard Hope might be out for a while longer but I am proud of my players performance at Fulham. The Worthington Cup's gone now but we will be looking for 3 points at Luton."

Wilson has also denied ceefax reports that the club have signed Southampton defender Richard Dryden on a month's loan. "These reports are simply not true. If and when any deal is done, there will be an announcement by the club in the usual way."

FULHAM 4-1 NORTHAMPTON TOWN

The Cobblers were last night outclassed by a strong Fulham side despite taking an early 1 goal lead in the sixth minute. Ian Sampson put a confident Northampton Town side up with his goal only to see it cancelled out on 45 minutes when Fulham's Davis scored. Goals from Fernandes (56) and Saha (71,90) saw any chances of a win for the Division 2 side vanish.

RESERVE MATCHES RE-OPENED

After many discussions, NTFC are glad to annouce that the reserve team matches next season WILL NOT be played behind closed doors. This follows their decision not to allow supporters into reserve team matches, blaming 'huge losses' last season. The club have overturned the decision, stating: "...we would like to assure supporters that we do listen to their views and try and act on them whenever possible. We would like to thank everyone who got in touch with the club to let us know their opinion on this matter."

RESERVE MATCH DETAILS

All home reserve team matches at Sixfields this season will be played behind closed doors, it was revealed today. The reason given by the club is that it 'could not continue to operate reserve team football in front of crowds at Sixfields while running up large losses'. The season ticket advertises free admision for PUBLIC home reserve matches and this will still be the case.

The loss made by The Cobblers last season ran into 5 figures - if that money can be saved this season, the club have stated that it will be put towards strengthening the squad.

NORTHAMPTON TOWN 1-2 WATFORD

A crowd of 3,166 saw travelling Watford beat the Cobblers 2-1 tonight. Dominic Foley headed Graham Taylor’s side in front on 10 minutes. Six minutes later the Cobblers had appeals for a penalty turned down after Forrester was seemingly fouled in the box. A free kick was given which John Frain took, providing the perfect ball for Sampson to nod back across the goal to Forrester who took the oportunity and made it 1-1. However, the homeside failed to capitalise and on 64 minutes Nordin Wooter turned in Peter Kennedy's shot to put Watford in front. Wilson: "It might have been a defeat, but there were plenty of positives. We created lots of chances and looked fairly strong. It’s August 12th that counts and with just one more friendly to go, we can’t wait to get going." REVIEW

DOBSON RELEASED

Left-sided central defender Tony Dobson was yesterday released by the club. The ex-West Brom player joined the Cobblers in September 1998 and has been fully involved in pre-season training. However, his battle to get fit left Wilson with no option. "It's a difficult situation but I would like to wish Tony all the best," said Wilson. "I'd like to thank him for his efforts and hope he finds a new club very soon."

KEEPER SOLLITT SIGNS

The Cobblers have signed Kettering Town goalkeeper Adam Sollitt on a two year contract for £30,000. The 23 year old was tracked by a number of clubs last season and spent a period on trial at Leicester City. Sollitt said of the move: "Northampton is now a massive club. They’ve just been promoted and it’s definitely a step in the right direction for me. I am looking forward to working with the likes of Nigel Spink and Keith Welch, and can’t wait to get started." Fourth summer signing Sollitt will wear the number 15 shirt next season.

WORTHINGTON CUP DRAW

The Cobblers have been drawn against Fulham in next season's Worthington Cup. August 21 sees the Cottagers travelling to Sixfields for the first round and two weeks later Craven Cottage is the destination for the Town. Wilson: "It's an interesting draw for us. It will be a difficult match and we're under no illusions about the size of the task we face. It would be nice to enjoy a cup run this season and we'll give it our best shot." See above for the full draw.

SPECULATION OVER NEW BOARD MEMBER

With NTFC splashing out their biggest ever fee on Jamie Forrester this week and rumours flying around regarding Gabbiadini's wage packet, the topic of conversation among Town fans has naturally turned to the question 'where has this money come from?'. Max Griggs' son is one name doing the rounds, but as yet the club have gone quiet on the matter. Expect more news soon.

ENCOURAGING YOUNGSTERS

The future is looking bright for The Cobblers with news that the under 10 team has just returned from a tour of Germany where they beat teams from countries including Holland and Spain to finish first. Posh, on the other hand, could only manage 9th. No laughing at the back there... Paul Curtis said of the youth development:"We have measured ourselves against some quality opposition at the end of the season and we have proved with our results that we are well placed with the Development of our youngsters. We are looking to recruit on the coaching side through the FA Journal Magazine to attract UEFA qualified coaches."

NEW SIGNING RUMOURS CONTINUE

Wilson is confident of making a signing before he sets off on holiday next week. Rumours over the possible transfers of Jamie Forrester, Daryl Clare and Gabbiadini are rife. Wilson: "Discussions are ongoing with Utrecht about Jamie Forrester who did very well when on loan here last season while we have also spoken to Marco Gabbiadini. He is currently away on holiday and he has said he will make a decision on his return at the end of June. I would anticipate any decisions on players to be made nearer the time that we return to training on July 5th, but supporters should know that we are working hard to improve the squad in time for the start of next season."
