Andrealphus, Mercurian Archangel of Love (Host)

Adapted by Charles E Smith

The world is nothing but love, endless and flowing, and we must nurture it so that all will be embraced by its endless warmth.

In appearance, Andrealphus is variable. Most of the time her appearance is that of a human female, although she has been known to take the appearance of a human male on occasion. In both forms, she epitomizes the most beautiful aspects of whatever gender she has chosen to take on, although she always seems to favor a European appearance. Her masculine form, Andre, tends to be about 6' 4", with long hair of inky-black hue and a body that looks as if it were sculpted from marble. Some who have seen it claim that she was the inspiration for the classical sculptures of Greek and authors like Michaelangelo. She neither confirms nor denies this. In her normal feminine form as Andrea, she appears as a fashion model's dream of physical perfection, usually with flowing sunshine-blonde hair, soft blue eyes, and a curvaceous body clothed only lightly, in silk and velvet. The only clear way to recognize Andrealphus is by the eyes. In whatever form, they are a clear, deep blue that seem to radiate both sadness and accepting love.

Dissonance

It is dissonant for a Servitor of Love to discourage or deny a love unless it is clear that the love in question is pernicious or harmful to one or both parties. Then it is dissonant for a Servitor of Love not to do all in their power to either end the pain in the relationship, or terminate it entirely, for the sake of the injured party or parties.

Organization (or "Days of Our Eternal Lives")

Ask The Sword or The Watch about the organization of Love and the response would be 'What organization?' Andrealphus, even before the Rebellion, was an easy-going Superior who didn't put many demands on her Servitors. 'Do what thou wilt, as long as you bring love to the world, shall be the whole of the law.' This has led to a very noticeable indolence in the ranks of Love.

Without a hard-driving Archangel to vigorously enforce a work ethic, the Servitors of Love have fallen into what could best be described as a soap opera. Of course, since these are angels, things don't quite as bad as murder plots (or even plans to seriously harm another), but it does make effective communication and group work anywhere from hard to impossible. Love is informally divided into two major camps (Passion and Lust, respectively headed up by the angels Tessara and Aphrodis). Even within these two camps, the level of drama is pretty high, so when angels from the two sides have to work together, the drama becomes so thick that one might need a sword to cut it. Something might not get done for example, because Angel X is still in a snit over the loss of her favorite concubine to Angel Y, who was only doing it to make Angel Z jealous (but Angel Z is oblivious, because he's still trying to make Angels A through D notice his existence): contrariwise, certain projects get priority, because the higher-ups have their own special protegees. Not to mention what happens when Andrealphus herself takes an interest in an angel...

All these cliques, gossip, rivalries, unrequited Loves, and affairs lead to a convoluted series of relationships in the field. In general, the angels of Love are supposed to help one another when they see it necessary. Unfortunately, Andrealphus never set down any particular rules on that, so Angel X from above might turn a deaf ear to a plea for help from Angel Y when the Servitors of Dreams turn up, in hopes that her concubine will come back to her. The angels of Love are very polite, if indolent and relaxed, around other angels of the Host, but amongst themselves, it's a social minefield.

Love and Children

Given the nature of Love, it should come as no surprise that the angels of Love can and frequently do have families and children, most often amongst the humans (though children with other angels is not uncommon either). Although the Word of Children falls under Innocence, the Servitors of Love claim that love for one's children does fall under the Word of Love. Families are most common amongst the Mercurians of Love, since Andrealphus has given them all the Corporeal Song of Fruition and told them to make the best of it.

The children of the angels of Love tend to be drawn, wittingly or not, into the social network of their angelic parents. They are often seduced, used, and tricked just like the angels of Love themselves, and for much the same reasons. It is of note that the half-mortal children of the angels of Love tend to be bigger and stronger than most humans, and more perceptive to Celestial and Ethereal matters, but so far most have not commented on that...

Tessara and Aphrodis

So what is up with Tessara and Aphrodis? Tessara is the Mercurian Angel of Passion, which covers all passions from romance to the passion of soldiers on the battlefield. Aphrodis is the Elohite Angel of Lust, who encourages hormonal attractions between people and sees promiscuity as simply a part of his Word. Together, they are the two top angels in the organization of Andrealphus, responsible for managing the Servitors of Love in the unpredictable absences of their Superior. Unfortunately, they are often at odds.

Tessara believes that blind passion, the all-consuming fire of raw, undisciplined emotion, is the only true way to express Love. She believes in going all-out, in intense expression of feelings. Thought and reason have no place in her world-view, she sees them only as hindrances. Aphrodis believes that physical consummation is the best and only way to truly express Love. With Elohite objectivity, he claims that only the physical consummation, and the children that result from such consummation, are the only reasons why the Word of Love exists in the first place. One might think that Passion and Lust would work well together, but Tessara cannot stand the rational Aphrodis, and Aphrodis cannot tolerate the impulsive Mercurian.

This has ramifications for Andrealphus' organization. The Servitors of Love are divided informally into two camps, one that serves Tessara, and one that serves Aphrodis. Of course, all angels of Love are expected to obey both angels in Andrealphus' absence, and this leads to problems. Frequently, Tessara will command one of Aphrodis' followers, or vice-versa, and the follower has no choice but to obey. This only contributes to the rivalries and tensions in Andrealphus' organization.

Thus it is ironic that the two angels often spend so much time in each other's bed. Passion and Lust, by the nature of their Words, are just naturally drawn to each other. Tessara and Aphrodis won't admit to that though, so they just sleep with each other and get it over with. Others might find it strange, but in Love's quirky network, it's really not all that unusual.

Angels in Erotica (read here "Angelporn")

Aphrodis has taken an increasingly human-friendly approach to his Word in these modern times. In a spin on Nybbas' Word of Communication, Aphrodis has actually encouraged the era of the erotic film, sending down angels to see that it is governed by the principles of Lust and explaining it to Andrealphus (when he sees her) as a necessary part of promoting Love. One can find Aphrodis' angels working both on stage as actors and actresses, and off-stage as writers, producers, and directors.

In order to better stimulate this market, Aphrodis has been granted permission by Andrealphus to use parts of the Gardens of Love and the Crystal Palace to shoot his own erotic films in Heaven, involving angels and blessed souls. Aphrodis claims that there is a thriving market for these films. He has not mentioned that this would be on Earth where he's secretly shipping these films for mainstream distribution under the theme of Fantasy Sex.

Andrea's Schedule

Why is Andrea always so busy? No one can say for certain. She wanders about Heaven and Earth, always busy with her appointments and social schedule, and has never bothered to explain this. Strangely, no one knows where she goes or what she does, which tends to be suspicious. Most write it off as being Love's fancy. Love is by her very nature flighty, and a Mercurian too, one of the elder Friends of Man. Who's to say that she isn't fraternizing with the humans? She is always stating that 'Love binds all things on all planes'.

Choir Attunements

Seraphim

Seraphim of Love can determine the Truth of a person's love for another (familial or romantic) by sight or by sound. This attunement kicks in automatically when the selected person speaks or the Seraph simply looks at them.

Cherubim

Cherubim of Love may nullify emotional or physical pain in an attuned for a period of hours equal to the number of the Cherub's Ethereal Forces.

Ofanim

Ofanim of Love automatically detect when a love near them (familial or romantic) is in danger and can increase their speed by (Corporeal Forces x 3) in defense of that love.

Elohim (Restricted)

Elohim of Love can generate and project emotions onto others. For example, an Elohite of Love can generate a feeling of joy within themselves and 'push' it into the minds of others, making them experience the joy as if it were their own. Andrealphus frowns upon this being used in regards to negative emotions (like rage or pain), but will tolerate it being used that way if there is justifiable reason. The effect lasts for (Celestial Forces x 2) hours.

Malakim

Malakim of Love can turn an attacker's own emotions against them. If one comes at a Malakite of Love with anger or hatred, the Malakite may turn it back against them, causing Ethereal damage equal to the strength of the emotion (suggested mechanic: use the CD of the attacker's successful attack roll). Malakim of Love also gain an increase of strength equal to (Corporeal Forces x 2) when defending a love or lover (whether this is familial love or romantic).

Kyriotates (Restricted)

Kyriotates of Love can sense the loves and relationships of someone they have possessed. They can then implant subconscious, post-hypnotic suggestions into the person's mind, compelling them to do the things that will strengthen those relationships after the Kyriotate has departed, and generally leaving behind happier, emotionally healthier people. Unfortunately, the corruptive influences of the Kyriotate usually breaks down moral and ethical strictures that bind people with societal restraints, which can lead to an emotionally healthier person, but one less able to truly function in society (i.e. doing inappropriate things like stalking one they love, believing that they are bringing themselves closer to a beloved person).

Mercurians

Mercurians of Love can use the Song of Ethereal Attraction and Corporeal Fruition without expending any Essence. They can also sense the strongest love or loves in a group of people automatically.

Lilim (Restricted)

Lilim of Love can see a person's deepest Needs of love (whether that is to repair their relationship with an estranged family member or to win the heart of the girl next door), and what they would do to earn or win that love. Charismatics are highly prized and deeply cherished in the order of Love.

Servitor Attunements

Star-crossed Love

Servitors of Love with this Attunement may see one person and automatically sense whom would that person's soul mate, their best match in all matters romantic, is and where that person can be found. The angel can set vital information in the person's mind on where their soul mate is, as well as a determination to find that person at whatever cost. In the presence of two soul mates, this attunement can be used to draw the two people together.

Relationship Therapist

Servitors of Love with this Attunement can make a person look deep within themselves, stripping away all pretensions, ego, and self-deceptions to look at themselves as they really are. At that state, they see their own connections to people as they are and why a relationship may be broken or damaged. The angel sees this too and may make helpful suggestions while the patient is in this deep hypnotic (and quite vulnerable) state.

Heart's Balm

With this Attunement, an angel may bind two soul mates together in such a way that whatever physical or emotional pain one experiences, both experience, but that pain is shared and thus is lessened. The soul mate can choose how they take this damage, though they must take the damage (i.e. Body hits, Mind hits, etc.)

Passion's Flame

With this Attunement, an angel can ignite the flames of physical and emotional passion within any two people within the angel's line of sight, as long as they have any sort of attraction to each other (even subconsciously). The affected people lose all sense of decorum and restraint and go at each other romantically. The effect lasts for a number of hours equal to the number of the angel's Ethereal Forces, or until physical danger threatens.

Disentanglement

Granted only to the most trusted of the Servitors of Love, this Attunement enables this angel to spot a pernicious or dangerous love (i.e. where one partner is being stalked or abused in some way), and then to step in and set a firm and absolute conviction in the party (or parties) being hurt that it is time to break off this relationship now. This conviction lasts for a number of days equal to the number of the angel's Celestial Forces times three and imparts a type of reckless courage that enables the injured party to stand up to an abuser or an angry lover or family member and do what must be done to escape the situation.

Sweet Bliss

With this Attunement, an angel can make a person drift into a state of sweet, dreamy bliss for (angel's Celestial Forces) hours. In this state, nothing going on around them can affect the person's content happiness, and they drift about as if on a cloud of happiness.

Loving Parent

With this attunement, an angel can use the Corporeal Song of Fruition for only 3 Essence, enabling them to produce children on the Corporeal Plane. This Attunement is common amongst the Servitors of Love, although Mercurians never receive it because they get it as part of their natural Attunement.

Distinctions

Vassal of Love

Vassals of Love may sense the most potent love within (Ethereal Forces) miles.

Friend of the Relationship

Friends of the Relationship may insinuate themselves into any romantic relationship and be accepted as a trusted friend or advisor. They get an automatic bonus (equal to their Ethereal Forces) to any attempt to enhance the love in a relationship, or if the relationship is an abusive one, any attempts to break it up.

Master of the Heart

Masters of the Heart may, once per day, select a person and ride shotgun as it were, through their emotions. The Master senses every emotion the person feels, sees, hears, and feels through their bodies, and has access to their memories. Unlike possession by a Kyriotate, the host is not even aware that they have a passenger along with them. The vessel of the angel simply returns to potentiality, appearing either right next to the host thus used for the experience or where they last stood, the Master's choice. This effect lasts for a number of hours equal to the number of the angel's Celestial Forces, and may be cancelled by the angel at any time. Masters of the Heart may also use the Songs of Ethereal Charm, Celestial Charm, Celestial Harmony, and Ethereal Attraction without expending Essence.

Ambassador of Loving Peace

Granted only to the most trusted and effective of Andrealphus' Servitors, Ambassadors of Loving Peace automatically have the Sweet Bliss Attunement in use on themselves fixed in permanent 'on' mode. They get a +5 to all Will rolls in the use of all Ethereal Songs and to all reaction rolls in dealing with other people. Most notably, neither Tessara nor Aphrodis are Ambassadors of Loving Peace.

History

Andrealphus was originally a Mercurian of Stone who believed that the universe should be bound together, but by what she did not know. She felt that the universe needed some agent for unification, but could not decide what it should be. She labored under David for some time until she chanced to meet Blandine and Beleth. The Archangel of Dreams and the Angel of Fear had found a way to reach beyond themselves and towards each other, but seemed lost. Andrealphus studied this connection, and with the natural insight that came so easily to her, she made suggestions and proposed ideas to them that led them to fall in love. Their love was so pure and bright that it became known as the Greatest Love in Heaven, and it was with the definition of the relationship as 'love' that Andrealphus found her purpose, and for it was granted her Word: Love.

The new-made Archangel of Love went through a period where she tried to bond the entire universe in love: matching up animals, people, she even made attempts at breeding plants so that they could only grow by being together. Andrealphus attracted a great following to her, working closely with Novalis, the Archangel of Flowers, to promote peace and love, as well as Lucifer and Eli. She was content with the universe as it stood.

Then came the Revolution. Andrealphus, being a lover and not a fighter, abstained from participating in the conflict. She retreated to the Glade of Novalis, where she had established a small base, and watched the fighting without comment. The battle between angels tore at the nature of the love that had existed in Heaven before the Revolution. When Blandine and Beleth split apart, the blow to her and her Word was nearly palpable.

In the aftermath, when the Exiles were banished to Hell, Andrealphus received another blow. Novalis chose to go with the Exiles. That hurt even more than Blandine and Beleth's break-up. Andrealphus didn't dare admit it in the tense atmosphere of Lucifer's triumph, but she had come to greatly admire Novalis and she missed her terribly. The Archangel of Love remained on the Seraphim Council, therefore, as she has to this

day, believing that it is only in Heaven that she could work to rebind all in a perfect love, and oversee human development.

Cathedral

The Gardens of Love stand where once the Glade of Novalis existed. The Gardens are a series of terraced, formal gardens, with bushes and trees grown together to form natural mazes. The Gardens are usually dark, illuminated only by silver moonlight, and contain many places for lovers to stroll, sit, talk, and even privacy areas for physical consummation of love. In the center of it all, arising from a large hill surrounded by a sparkling lake, rises the Crystal Palace of Andrealphus, designed in the fashion of romantic castles from storybooks and fairytales. Here is where Andrealphus presides and where the hearts of her Servitors are kept. The Servitors of Love and the blessed souls assigned here can be seen lounging about or engaging in idle chatter, lovemaking, or eating and drinking. There is no particular shame about public displays of indolence.

Personality

Andrealphus still believes in love and that love conquers all. She keeps the Gardens as a memorial to her friend Novalis. Andrealphus is aware that there are some problems with Lucifer's rule and Heaven's rule in universal affairs, but she, not wanting to admit that she was wrong in her choice, stubbornly insists that these are slight problems and not major crises. She closes her eyes and turns a deaf ear to the many problems of Lucifer's administration. She loves humans, after her fashion, but she has been influenced by Heaven's ideals and does tend to treat the blessed souls in her Gardens like children, although children to be fussed over and coddled. She's rather fastidious about her appearance too, forever arranging her cosmetics and looking for the latest fashions. Andrea is the ultimate well-meaning matchmaker, naturally, and she loves to gossip, in a good way.

Role in the War

Andrealphus sees herself as a diplomat and an ambassador. Because she still sees Novalis as her best friend, and because her Word is Love, she does not engage in military actions against the Exiles, although she loathes most of the Exiles for ripping the universe asunder. Above all, Andrealphus dislikes injury to herself or to her appearance, so the Beautiful Archangel doesn't like fighting on general principle anyway.

Superior Opinions

Beleth: "So very, very sad. It...hurts to look at Beleth. I am reminded of the Greatest Love in Heaven, that which she shared with Blandine. I feel so sad about how that ended. I...don't like to think about it."

<Sidebar>

Blandine and Beleth

Andrealphus still remembers the Greatest Love in Heaven, although she cannot do so without pain. She would like to see it come again, but she is unsure how to bring the Archangels of Dreams and Holy Fear back together, so she tries matchmaking with other angels and humans. Andrea believes that she can still be an intermediary between Blandine and Beleth, and is often willing to work in that capacity, though she takes no hand in the fighting between them. She views that as simply domestic violence.

</end Sidebar>

Beth: "Who? Oh yeah, doesn't she crate up the erotica and stick it on the top shelves in the Archives? I need to talk to her about that. Aphrodis is getting antsy about her doing that."

Christopher: "Such a sweet girl! The product of Kobal's Love for the universe. She always cheers me up and I'm glad she can't change. Innocence is immutable and eternal, and she will lead us to salvation."

Demogorgon: "How can one have a stable relationship if he and his come along and disrupt things? I mean, really! I think Demogorgon must go on that principle alone."

Eve: "She is the salvation of humanity and we must see to it that her hopes for her children are realized. I just wish she had a different Word."

Gebbeleth: "He's too confusing! I don't get him. He makes my head spin. Relationships are so much easier and more satisfying than his people's cloistered existence anyway. Still, he is the result of the Greatest

Love, and I must respect that..."

Iblis: "Him and his glory! Of what use is glory without one to share it with? Iblis is incomplete and thus lacking because he doesn't understand that very simple concept." (Sigh)

Israfel: "I do wish she'd stop dallying and put things back together. What's taking so damned long?!"

Jean: "The old man? He needs a girlfriend. Maybe I can set him up with Tessara. That ought to get Lightning crashing again!"

Kobal: "Sometimes he can cheer me up when I think about how far this idiocy has progressed. He's a Mercurian too, so he understands what it's been like since the Symphony had its accident."

Laurence: "I respect the Sword because of his integrity, but I wish he'd mind his own damned business and tell his people to quit harassing mine for not being 'disciplined'. You know, as I think about it, maybe Laurence needs to spend more time with Zadkiel..."

Lucifer: "I'm certain that Lucifer remains the key to binding everything together again. Maybe setting him up with Gabriel or Novalis will soften the Light. You give me such interesting ideas..."

Malphas: "Detestable breaker of bonds! I can't stand him!"

Marc: "I think I understand his sacrifice, because I made one of my own. One day, the universe shall be as it was, and all will be back to normal once more."

Zadkiel: "You know what I said about Laurence? Goes for Zadkiel. Go ye forth and bind the Swordsman and the Watcher in Holy matrimony!"

Superior Opinions (Exiles)

Baal: "Valor, Glory, same thing." (Shrug)

Blandine: "Her Word helps me in the darker periods when I miss Novalis the most. I still grieve for the loss of the Greatest Love, and for that I grieve for her."

David: "My former Archangel. I like to think I still hold to his principles of unification, even though he is broken now."

Dominique: "Justice is dry and bland compared to Love, and I can't think of a way to get her interested in clothes or fashion or romance either. She needs a life. Maybe I should set her up with Gebbeleth or Lucifer. It would be for her own good."

Eli: "I don't get him! Love leads to Creation, so why isn't he here, working with me?! He's just so stubborn! You'd think a Friend of Man would be interested in helping mankind."

Haagenti: "I respect his Vigor and his enthusiasm. I wish we had more Archangels like him."

Lilith: (Sigh) "I wish she was more like Eve. There wouldn't be so many problems if she'd just accept that we love her and know what's best for her and her kind."

Nybbas and Lilith

Andrealphus is fascinated by a rumor that a Seraph who defected from Liberation to Trade. The Seraph told her that Lilith was rumored to have feelings for the Archangel of Communication. Ever since then, Andrealphus has been devoting considerable time and effort to bringing together Nybbas and Lilith. Her methods are intrusive but well meaning, of course. This project is something that has been tying up quite a few Servitors of Love lately. The Archangel of Love has resorted to leaving love letters for Lilith written in duplicated handwriting of Nybbas (supposedly from a secret admirer), at Tethers of Liberation, and vice-versa.

</Sidebar>

Malphas: "Ick. Double the Malphas, double the trouble!"

Novalis: "My best friend. I so miss her. I hope she comes back some day so Heaven can be what it was and we can move into a new Golden Age."

Nybbas: "Communication is important in love, but Nybbas keeps trying to pervert the message for his misguided causes. Stop him...gently. After all, Lilith loves him and that must be encouraged."

Ogiel: "Wasn't he the one with the mental retardation? I'm sure Novy can fix him. Novy can fix anything!" (Dreamy smile)

Raphael: "I don't see the point of Knowledge in Love. Love is a law unto itself."

Uriel: "Pure love is nice. His Purity is so misguided though, and the way he treats the Ethereals...!" (Shakes her head)

Vapula: "A clone of Jean, only younger. He's far too obsessive with his little project. He needs a girlfriend too. Maybe he should be set up with Beth. They both have tunnel vision after all."

Others

Adam: "Just because you've been burned once or twice doesn't mean you should swear off Love. I know I can fix the First Man up with someone. Israfel comes to mind. After all, his relationships with humans haven't worked out, so next he should try an Archangel." (Nods)

Asmodeus: "His convoluted mind needs to relax sometime. Maybe if he were set up with Raphael he would finally be at peace."

Beelzebub: "I don't like War. It ruins my hair and chips my nails. Make the icky Kyriotate go away!"

Fleurity: "Soothing sometimes eases the pain of a broken love, and for that I can admire Fleurity's work. I think he needs to stop making waves and just return to Heaven's fold, where he can do the most good."

Gabriel: "She is consummation and I am love. We compliment each other and I just hope that she regains her sanity at some point."

Jordi: "Poor Jordi. I pity him."

Mariel: "Why must she bring up the past!!! I had finally succeeded in getting past the pain and then she had to go and remind me! Her memories are false! She is mad! Make her leave me be!"

Soldekai: "Hope is a very important Word. I don't think it should be in the hands of a Malakite though. Even my own Barons have problems with gentler emotions, and Hope is too delicate for a Malakite to screw up..."

White Star: "Who? Never heard of him."
