Angels of Final Judgement: Daniel and Hutriel are, combined, very nearly the equal of an Archangel. Their most obvious ability is to forbid anyone that their combined gazes look upon from moving past them; they also seem to able to detect when a human is 'worthy' of entering Heaven. They no doubt have other abilities, but their mutual task precludes most activities, so it is hard to be sure.
The first thing that anyone sees upon approaching the Gates of Heaven are what appear to be two statues towering on either side, absolutely impassive, absolutely still. Each statue holds a two-handed sword, stretched out at an angle so that the tips barely touch, high above the exact center of the Gates themselves. The overall effect is much like the rest of the Regent's Heaven: powerful, subtly alien and fairly overwhelming to the average human.
It's much more so when one of the blades blurs into action to cleave spies, saboteurs or the just plain lost.
Daniel and Hutriel have been standing watch over the Gates since just past the First Incursion. Before that time, there had been no serious attempts to infiltrate Heaven: while the Michaelines would have quite enjoyed the prospect, they were too few and too weak to properly do the job. Once they had the resources of Hades, however, Servitors of Resistance had a field day exploiting the chink in Heaven's walls... until the Regent decreed that suitable guardians be found.
Daniel and Hutriel seemed perfect for the position: former servants of Judgement who switched service to the Sword at the end of the Revolution, they had the technical experience needed for the job... and did not have the necessary connections to avoid it. The procedure that gave them both the same Word is one of Heaven's deepest secrets, presuming of course that Lucifer actually remembers how he managed to do it. At any rate, they've spent the last twenty thousand years watching for those attempting to enter Heaven without leave. Once they discover one, the blades come down, dispatching that unlucky soul instantly.
How successful they are remains an open question: certainly, every entity they've destroyed has later been confirmed as being unworthy of the privilege of eternal bliss. However, some wonder whether they've gotten them all. Apparently, the Angels of Final Judgement can detect disguised celestials, ethereals of all stripes and the Fated. Those Destined to Heaven, but with treason buried deep in their hearts, might just be able to walk past them: the question has never been satisfactorily answered, unfortunately. It's also known that Ogiel does not particularly worry about the presence of the Angels of Final Judgement. Indeed, he's been known to praise the policy that keeps them in place, firmly guarding the front door, and is even on the record as requesting that Daniel and Hutriel should get even more and more support and assistance from the rest of the Host. But then, the Archangel of Resistance is known for his disdain of front doors.
However, the greatest trouble may end up coming from within. More than twenty thousand years of thankless service to the same Word has eroded much of the pair's separate personalities, but Daniel and Hutriel have a mutual secret that has somehow managed to survive their steady homogenization. It would seem that one of them had only pretended to switch sides at the end of the Revolution. One of the Angels of Final Judgement has been waiting for all this time to strike a blow for the Justice that his Heart still calls out for. In other words, one of the angels is a traitor to Heaven.
The only problem is, by now neither one can work out who...
