Call him one of Laurence's little tests.
When Khalid came back into the fold, naturally Laurence was overjoyed… but perhaps still just the slightest bit concerned. After all, Laurence of all people knows how hard it is to stay on the straight and narrow. He didn't doubt his brother's sincerity in the slightest, of course: however, tolerance is one of those things that you have to practice constantly if you want to stay good at it. Khalid hadn't had much practice lately. All in all, it'd be best if he had a reminder.
Thomas was the perfect candidate. Since his entrance to Heaven, the Angelic Doctor had broadened his mental horizons considerably (spending several centuries debating metaphysics and philosophy with all comers will do that to you), but lately the Saint wanted to be a bit more active. Thomas missed being a priest, and he certainly missed not being deferred to just because he happened to be one of the Catholic Church's most famous theologians. Really, the things that he wanted to do on Earth were more Faith's responsibilities than the Sword's. Seeing how Khalid handled a devout (but broadminded) Catholic servant was only an added benefit.
Laurence needn't have worried. Thomas won the respect of the Archangel of Faith before the Saint even finished demolishing Khalid's position on a particularly tricky interpretation of a hadith at their first meeting (although Thomas lost the next three rounds). The Saint has adjusted to the realities of the Symphony, and has long since learned that Truth is found in more places than he once may have thought.
These days, Thomas serves as the rector of a small Catholic parish in an undistinguished small city. His long-term goals are to encourage cooperation with the other churches, synagogues and mosques in the area, to do something about local poverty and crime levels, and to get a new roof for the rectory. He's almost indecently happy in his work. Thomas doesn't like violence (actually, "hates it with a passion" would be more accurate), but he doesn't encounter much of it. Much of this would be due to the fact that every Servitor of Faith and/or the Sword in the area (or even close to the area) has been told, quite firmly, that things are to remain quiet, peaceful and tranquil, or else. However, Thomas' skills in logic and debate are certainly a factor. The Saint is already a local legend for the time he talked six gang members into putting down the electronic equipment and coming to confession. One is now a priest, the second is in college, two of them are Soldiers of Stone, and the last two do the offertory at Mass. Again, Thomas really loves his work.
He also occasionally gets a certain visitor who has a taste for abstruse theological disputes and gallons of black coffee, but that just keeps him in fighting trim. Metaphorically speaking, of course.
