He's seen better days.
Actually, that's too flippant. The New Soviet Man (NSM) is dying - and worse, knows it. No matter what one might think of Communism (and that argument is still going strong on all three planes of existence), the ethereal was personally an all right guy. Maybe not the most flexible entity in existence, but good to have at one's back in a pinch - and he was always ready to help out. It's not his fault that he got associated with a totalitarian regime.
However, said totalitarian regime is now dust on the wind, and pretty soon ... so will he. He can feel himself start to slip away: if he's lucky, the NSM has about five years, tops, before he becomes too faint to be effective. It's not something to look forward to, so he's decided not to. Time for one last glorious blow against the Enemies of the People, it would seem.
The only problem was, which enemies? Going after, say, the USA is kind of futile - besides, he's actually worked with Uncle Sam a couple of times in the last few decades, and doesn't want to duplicate ideology that much (not to mention the fact that Sam would reluctantly wipe the floor with him). Going after Hell ... well, there's the minor fact that the NSM was a 'god' of an atheistic pantheon, so he finds it a little hard to even recognize demons in the first place.
The NSM was pretty much in a quandary until he noticed the explosive growth of the Russian Mafia. The fact that these guys seem to evoke every negative thing about capitalism was nice: add to that the fact that they seemed to have recruited former Servants of the State (read: "traitors"), and the NSM became very happy. Destroying some of those leeches on the sacred body of the rodina was just what he wanted to do before he 'died'.
In fact, that's what he's doing now, and having quite a bit of fun in the process. The hooligans are starting to whisper about a grim man that appears out of nowhere and blows up drug laboratories; a man who shrugs off bullets; a man who always leaves a hammer and sickle behind (usually carved into someone's forehead). In fact, the belief in his supernatural abilities may start actually feeding Essence to him soon (something that the NSM will not be happy about, actually: he wants to have them fear him, not worship him).
Needless to say, both sides of the War are starting to get reports about this, and theoretically both sides want the NSM dead. Of course, angels might decide to interpret 'get rid of him' to include the clause '...by giving him enough firepower and backup to let him take a lot of utter bastards with him'. Any demons that serve Princes who hate Fleurity or Mammon might likewise indulge in a spot of creative editing.
Funny how that seems to happen a lot with certain celestials.
