Background: IOU has all sorts of celestials,
including representatives from three distinct Heavens and five different
Hells. There is one particular type,
however, that is somehow deemed to be - not more real, that would be
judgmental. Perhaps the proper word
would be 'attuned'. Whatever it is, one
set of celestials seems to just fit in better with the University. Mindy is one of those celestials: she is a
newly-fledged Ofanite of the Sword who is eager to prove herself to her
Archangel, just as soon as she can get her Masters degree in Applied
Theology. Which may, unfortunately take
some time, as she is not precisely an ideal student.
It isn't that she's dumb; the problem, in fact, is that Mindy is notably intelligent even for a campus known for its raw brainpower. She also doesn't need to sleep, doesn't need to eat, has esoteric powers over motion... in short, the Ofanite has not felt the need to learn how to discipline herself to do steady work, which is stalling her progress up the hills of Academe. This would normally not be an issue as long as the student tuition money keeps flowing, of course, but Mindy's professors have actually begun to put pressure on her to do better. The delicate hand of the ArchDean is suspected, for reasons probably better left unstated, or perhaps even un-thought.
Mindy has not yet really noticed that she is the
target of any cabal, let alone one with the unnatural goal of getting her to
graduate on some rough approximation of on schedule. As her schedule does not push her overmuch, she's had to go find
her own entertainment. Being a Servitor
of the Sword, this means punishing evildoers; being an Ofanite, this means
doing so at high speeds... and this being IOU, it seemed to her perfectly
logical to adopt a secret persona of a masked, quasi-amine heroine, complete
with bright primary colors and a supposed magical 'wand' - which is actually
just a baseball bat with some illusions put on it, but it's the style of the
thing. Fortunately for probably
everybody, actual serious crime is fairly rare at IOU, so Mindy mostly uses her
Magical Rainbow Glitter Fairy persona as an excuse to use her regular angelic
abilities without having to answer awkward questions about her, the actual
relationship between the aforementioned three Heavens and Five Hells and just
why the Archdean and 'Fred' are sometimes seen having coffee with that old guy
with the socks. Fortunately for Mindy,
IOU is about the only place where such a ploy could very well succeed.
