Oh, how Dominic wants this one.

Bad enough that Mercury went Outcast. Worse that he continued in his folly and pride, even then. Worse still that he 'went native' among the ethereal gods, actually pretending to be one of those parasites. All of these things would be a source of deep shame, to any proper angel.

But the most infuriating thing is that he dared - HE DARED - raise his hand against his erstwhile brothers during the Purity Crusade. The reports are quite clear: Mercury was seen fighting on the side of the Olympians, spitting curses and defiance at the angels of the Host engaged on their grim duty. He even managed to kill several of them before the Greco-Roman pantheon was forced to retreat to the Far Marches.

When he heard of this abomination, Dominic found that he understood Asmodeus' chilly loathing of Renegades just a tad better.

The only reason why the Inquisition hasn't caught up to Mercury yet is because he spends most of his time in the Marches, and Dominic cannot project enough force there to flush him out. The Archangel of Judgement hasn't forgotten about this Outcast, however: Mercury is near the top of whatever wanted list exists in specific campaigns, and would stay there even if the unthinkable happened and the Host made peace with the pantheons.

Considering the quality of his enemy, some naive angels would thus think that Mercury might not be such a bad fellow to know. They would be quite foolish to think so: the Outcast is a paranoid manipulator with a definite megalomaniac streak. Mercury went Outcast because he would much rather be a big fish in a small pond, and the Purity Crusade only made him more relatively powerful. In other words, he is not nice. He is not nice at all.

He is also currently without a home. Heaven is looking for him. Hell won't take him: Asmodeus (after a long weighing of his options) has decided that recruiting him would not be cost effective. The surviving Olympians cast him out, directly thanks to Athena (she - justifiably - blames Mercury for many of the foolish mistakes made by Zeus and Ares during the Crusade, not to mention Hermes' probable death). The Outcast is now a wanderer, spending time at various domains and exploring the farthest portions of the Marches. What he's looking for is uncertain, but if he ever finds it...
