Do you want to see Novalis wince? Ask how her daughter is doing.
Now bear in mind that she loves Lily: always has, always will. And it's not that Lily isn't a good girl at heart. It's just that her daughter was always a bit … wild. Part of that was the Ofanite in her (what passes for genetics in celestials is endlessly fascinating, but not particularly germane to the topic at hand). Part of it was the exuberant vitality one would expect in the child of an avatar of Nature. Most of it, though, was really bound up in the fact that Lily found being stuck in Novalis' Glade all day boring, boring, boring. As any parent of human teenagers will tell you, dealing with a difficult adolescent can be a headache and a half. Dealing with a difficult adolescent angel is even worse. Their formative years can last for eons.
You often don't see many runaways in Heaven, but Novalis for a century or two had her hands full just trying to find out where Lily was camped out this month. Whether it was flitting through the Cathedral of Light on a dare, or buzzing the Halls of Progress at high speed, Lily could be counted on to lead her mother through a merry chase. It wasn't until she started hanging out in the Groves that Lily started to calm down. While Michael had his good points (not to mention several very interesting stalwart warrior types), Lily found herself drawn to Janus' group, as time went on. The Archangel of the Wind eventually convinced Novalis that, like it or not, Lily would probably be happier with a new boss.
This is not to say that Novalis is too pleased with this. Even leaving aside the natural worries of a parent, Lily is at risk simply because she's the daughter of an Archangel. Granted, it would be a stupid demon indeed that decided to strike at Novalis by assaulting Lily (it's usually considered a Good Idea to avoid making a Superior personally, murderously mad at you), but that consideration might not stop a Prince. Novalis has handled it by assigning a permanent squad of Cherubim to keep an eye on her: it's rumored that they've been given a, shall we say, unique lecture on what constitutes "unnecessary violence": this is, of course, yet one more bone of contention between her and her daughter. She's still worried.
Lily quite likes working for the Wind. Janus uses her whenever he needs to coordinate joint efforts with Servitors of Flowers (he's noticed that they all jump through hoops to accommodate her), as well as a general courier. She's a lot less violently inclined than the average Servitor of the Wind, so she doesn't go looking for fights, but Lily's not afraid of them.
Lily's generally a nice enough kid. She doesn't actually like fighting with her mother, but they’ve got wildly different personalities, so it's an uphill battle not to. Generally, she'll drop by the Glades from time to time, stay for a day or two, and then use the excuse of her dissonance conditions to bail before the arguments start. Bear in mind, of course, that Lily may fight with Novalis, but that doesn’t even remotely mean that she doesn't love her. God help anyone that messes with Flowers in her presence.
There's one other thing that might prove awkward, or tragic, or starkly dangerous later, depending on the circumstances. You see, Lily ran into Rex ("the Media's idiot son") a while back. She thinks that he's a moron, albeit an extraordinarily cute moron: he thinks that she'd be Cool, if she wasn't an angel and thus a complete dweeb. Such vehement, vocal, ostentatious dislike among two young people means precisely the same thing among celestials as it does between mortals.
This is not going to amuse either parent, once they find out, and they will: you see, 'children' of Superiors aren't all that common. On those very rare occasions when Novalis and Nybbas are face to face, and in "enforced truce" mode, out come the snapshots and a certain wary commiseration about the younger generation ensues. If anything actually ever happens, there's going to be some extremely odd 'mixed parties' out there trying to hush the whole thing up quietly.
