The Christian Bible speaks of a God-fearing Roman Centurion who, after a visitation from an angel, sought out the Apostle Peter and became the first Gentile to embrace Christianity. The Bible, however, fails to mention what happened to him afterwards.

What happened is that the angel returned to the Centurion (known as Cornelius) and recruited him as a Soldier of Stone. Cornelius spent the rest of his life fighting a hidden battle against those forces of Hell determined to nip the new faith into the bud, and easily achieved his Destiny in the process. When he died, it was only natural that he continued to serve David in Heaven.

Cornelius is one of the very few Saints that have served in the Corporeal plane more than once - he's done it at least twelve times - and he is the highest ranking blessed soul in David's organization. In fact, he has the very highest of rankings. The Archangel of Stone considers Cornelius to be the epitome of what humanity could and should be, and respects his opinion about matters concerning mortals. Laurence (who has become the patron of Christianity) likewise treats Cornelius with special favor: he'd like the Saint to come work for him, but has become resigned to simply seeking his opinion on matters.

You would think that having two Archangels ready to listen to you (even if they won't automatically agree with your opinions) would encourage an unseemly pride.

You would be right.

Cornelius isn't an evil person, by any stretch of the imagination: in fact, he's a very good one. However, he does have possibly a bit more self-assurance then circumstances might warrant. There's a definite degree of overconfidence, too, which is almost justified. 'Almost' is the key word, here: the Saint has never seriously failed in any of his corporeal missions, and he doesn’t really expect that he ever will. This means that he’ll be fairly slow to call for help, even when he really needs it.

Normally, this sort of pride would be effectively meaningless, except that David is planning to send down the Saint for another mission. And this time, as soon as Malphas finds out about it, he'll make sure that Cornelius has a quite interesting tour of duty. The Prince of Factions doesn’t normally concentrate on any one opponent, but in this case he'll be more than happy to make an exception…
