Amorsai is an indication of just how far Gluttony has fallen. Not that she sees it that way.
In the good old days, she was one of Haagenti’s most capable lieutenants, capable of handling things somewhat more subtly than her Superior: while never in the first rank, she was widely considered to be the best of the second. Amorsai was very good at making deals, and used that to good effect by avoiding service on Earth whenever possible.
When Haagenti Redeemed, it was deemed a regrettable incident rather than a harbinger of things to come. After a short period of violent internal dispute, Amorsai was picked as the new Demon of Gluttony because she seemed strong enough to handle the Word but weak enough to not successfully resist the "temporary" usurpation of certain of Gluttony’s areas of interest by Andreaphlus and the outsider Nybbas. There was never any question of a new Princedom of Gluttony: Amorsai was forced to be publicly content with a reduced Word.
Unfortunately for everyone concerned, that of Malphas and Saminga soon followed the defection of Haagenti. At the same time, tensions in Shal-Mari rose to the celestial equivalent of a gang war as "disavowed" factions of Lust and the Media struck against each other’s power structure. Faced with similar conflicts in Stygia and Abbadon, Baal and Asmodeus’ forces were not able to effectively stamp down on the fighting. Everyone’s business suffered… especially Gluttony’s. What organization still existed to be inherited by Amorsai was severely weakened by the violence.
Still, Amorsai’s situation isn’t completely bleak. At this point, Shal-Mari has broken down to seven or eight (depending on who you ask) discrete zones of control, and the various Princes are too interested in opposing each other to occupy Gluttony’s turf. She’s capitalized on this by playing off the various factions, as well as making her occupied territory a safe place where necessary business can be conducted. The Princes of Shal-Mari may not respect her, but their underlings certainly do: some joint projects still need to be done, and having a safe place to do them is vital. Amorsai has also forged links with Asmodeus and Valefor, trading services and intelligence for protection.
Amorsai has one other hidden ally: the damned souls. She isn’t a Mercurian, by any means: they’re still just talking monkeys that exist to be drained of Essence. It’s just that now they have another use. Every damned soul knows that Amorsai will pay well for information, whether it’s in protection, favors or just a good meal, and that she doesn’t welsh on a deal. More refreshingly, she’s straightforward about it. Her organization has more damned souls openly working for her than most Princes: she’ll even train exceptional individuals in Songs or skills (as an ordinary Word-Bound, she can’t gift Attunements). Several demons have had nasty surprises after trying to shake down the wrong Glutton. Asmodeus tolerates this only because she keeps full records of the individuals so honored, and will give them up to him once the crisis is over.
Still, the situation won’t last forever. Eventually, one Prince will achieve clear control, if only because the rest of Hell or Lucifer will step in. Even if Amorsai gains the upper hand in Shal-Mari and becomes a full Princess, the humans working for her are going to raked over the coals, literally. Shal-Mari remains fully Hellish, without Hope of any kind for the mortals.
But the food’s good, and things could always be worse.
Combat
Amorsai is not a combat monster. On the corporeal plane, she tends to run: in Hell, she blocks a lot and screams for her guards (who are combat monsters). She’s capable of tearing apart the average demon or angel, of course, but is weak compared to her peers. But she is very good at avoiding fights, or at least physical violence: her battles are ideally fought where a Song or flaming sword is useless. She also minimizes her risks by staying out of the corporeal plane: her Word is doing just fine down there without her help, and there’ll be plenty of time to work on Earth once the situation in Shal-Mari is resolved. Amorsai isn’t on anyone’s list for dissolution, after all. Someone has to be the Demon of Gluttony, and she’s made no major enemies. They’ll be plenty of time to achieve Princehood later on.
