Repairmen

(With apologies to David Brin)

It was getting cold, and that just made people walk faster past the poor guy wrapped up in whatever raggedy clothing he could find. Rude of them, but everybody's got their own problems: it's hard sometimes in this world to see others'. I adjusted my own, very warm coat and considered it for a moment. Yeah, it was ready to go. It was a nice coat, but that's the point, right?

I walked over to that poor person and waited for his inevitable, "Spare some change?"

"Sorry, sir," - always be polite. It's their world, not ours - "I'm afraid I don’t have any money to spare. I would like to make a trade, though."

That made him suspicious. Curse Hell and its works. "What kind of trade?"

"Even swap. Your coat for mine." That made him even more suspicious, so I added, "Tell you what: I'll trade hats and gloves as well." Oddly enough, humans will accept something really out of the ordinary fairly more easily than something that's just a little unusual. The guy looked at my well-made, clean, warm outer garments and obviously decided that I was some kind of altruistic madman. We ended up trading coat, gloves, scarf, hat, shoes, socks and sweater: he declined to trade underwear, which I suppose was just as well. He even thanked me without sneering (I made a mental note to let the Servitor of Novalis six blocks down know about this guy). I could feel his pleasantly surprised eyes follow me as I walked off.

The shoelaces were a bit aggravating at first, but they regenerated themselves within a block. By the time I reached the subway stop, my ensemble had shed the vermin and the smell, and the various holes were beginning to close. I guessed that I'd be able to trade away this current set within a day.

I certainly hoped so. It’s been a cold winter.

This is the newest minor Choir: Eli only started to create Repairmen after he began his self-imposed exile. Every so often, one shows up in Heaven, looking about curiously … just before the hordes of recruiters show up. Everybody wants Repairmen, and they've become one of the primary reasons why most Superiors want to find Eli now: they want to know how to make more of them, or at least get a decent supply. Once they can get the Archangel of Creation back in Heaven, Dominic may be astounded about how little support he really has in prosecuting Eli…

Resonance

Repairmen (the Council's still trying to come up with a suitably solemn name for them) can apparently set entropy to the reverse setting. Any mundane item that they regularly use or wear will swiftly revert to optimal condition and durability. With a successful resonance roll, they can even make the object better than new. Usually, either ability needs materials to make up for missing parts, but as long as humans produce trash, a Repairman will have everything he needs to fix something.

Dissonance

Repairmen suffer dissonance whenever they fail to give away a personal item to someone who needs it more than they do. They are free to trade (most do), and if the needy person explicitly refuses a proffered item, then the Repairman will not suffer dissonance in that particular case. Note that this Choir dislikes carrying artifacts and relics: while it's rare that someone really needs a Fiery Sword more than the angel, it's been known to happen, and the angel won't hesitate to hand it over if she thinks that it's necessary. The Host really frowns on that sort of thing.

Manner and Appearance

Repairmen (they come in both male and female versions, actually) usually have a fairly eccentric appearance. While they're always in perfect physical condition, and have fairly attractive features, their resonance ignores such things as aesthetics. A Repairman usually wears well made, but hideously clashing, clothing. Repairmen can maintain Roles, but only ones that tolerate eccentricity and don't penalize an apparent total lack of fashion sense.

In their celestial form, they resemble Mercurians, except that their body and wings are a deep golden color. Some are silver or bronze colored instead. They usually get along with every Choir, but Mercurians understand them best.

No Repairman has Fallen yet. When one finally does, Kobal will be more than happy to welcome the new Joker: their cynical contempt for an ungrateful humanity (and ability to make items profoundly and fatally unlucky) will suit him to the ground. He’ll also figure out how to duplicate them, no doubt.

Game Mechanics

The primary ability of a Repairman doesn't require a roll: it's essentially a special effect (please note that something lacking ammunition, electricity or fuel isn't damaged). The angel may bring an item to its original condition within a day for every full hundred pounds of weight (less time if the item is only slightly out of repair, but never less than a day). If parts are missing, the angel must add an equivalent amount of any matter: the item may not be completely broken, however. This ability never works on living creatures.

However, making something better than new requires a resonance roll. Note that the below table assumes that the item has already been brought to its original condition: the angel can't get upgrade something until it's already at the peak of normal efficiency. Also note that the items listed are merely examples: this is a versatile ability.

Resonance Check Digit Table

1) If you hold on to a light item (max. 20 lb.) for a week, it will increase in efficiency. A coat might get a little thicker, or perhaps a cheap wristwatch will end up keeping accurate time.

2) As above, but it only takes a day. Moderately heavy items (max. 100 lb.) will increase in efficiency if worn or used for a week. The television signal will come in clear, or the washing machine will stop eating socks.

3) Moderately heavy items will take about a day to upgrade; heavy items will take a week. The car's gas mileage will improve, or the fridge won't suck up as much power.

4) At this point, light items can be seriously refined within a week. The coat's fabric becomes an efficient insulator comparable to that used for cold-weather gear; the watch rivals an atomic clock in accuracy.

5) As above, but light items are refined in a day, moderately heavy items within a week. The TV will become cable ready; the washing machine can suddenly get out any stain or ground in dirt.

6) Moderately heavy items are refined in a day, heavy items within a week. The car apparently now has no emissions worth noting; the fridge will suddenly acquire an icemaker.

More sophisticated Uses of Resonance

Naturally, this ability is a great help when you need to fix anything. Repairmen get +2 to all repair or maintenance rolls (including defaults): in fact, a Repairman carrying or using something is all the maintenance an item needs.

Also, when a Divine Intervention appears on a resonance roll, the results can be… dramatic. The angel might end up with anything (anything, at least, that's really necessary at that particular second).

Repairmen in the Host

There aren't many (varies by campaign, but no more than a few hundred). Whenever a new one shows up, pretty soon a lot of polite personal representatives of various Archangels (all of whom are more than ready to explain why their Superior is just the boss that the Repairman is looking for) will suddenly surround the bemused angel. Fanatic Servitors with flaming swords are easy to get. Entities who can fix things by playing with them for a few days are much, much rarer. The War faction wants to keep their weapons nice and shiny, the peace faction wants angels who can make constant, tangible improvements to humanity, and everybody wants their Tethers kept in good corporeal shape.

Thus, Repairmen can pick and choose their initial boss. Luckily, they tend to be almost pathologically selfless, even by angelic standards, so they usually don’t make many celestial enemies. They only insist on being given mostly corporeal duty. Dominic has tried to grill a few about Eli's current whereabouts, but members of this Choir usually have no idea, and he hasn't pushed it: the Archangel of Judgement needs maintenance personnel as much as the next Superior.

Incidentally, it's rumored that some Repairmen stick around on the corporeal plane, working directly for Eli. Nobody's actually confirmed this yet, but it's not too unlikely. Time will tell.

Repairman of Dreams

Blandine gives these angels the ability to fix dream-stuff itself. A Repairman of Dreams may enter the dreamscape of a person on the verge of entering Beleth's side of the Marches: if she spends the entire night within the dream (and makes a Perception Roll), the dreamscape will drift away from the border, and the next overt attempt by Servitors of Nightmares to affect it will be at -1.

Repairman of Children

Any item given to a Needy child will make them blatantly visible and obvious to an adult that is ready and able to aid them. Of course, Christopher expects the angel to do that himself, but he recognizes that children on the street don't always trust strangers. The effect lasts for about a week.

Repairman of Stone

Repairmen of Stone can reinforce structures, making them stronger than before. The process takes a day of constant meditation per story of building, but the result will result in a fireproof (if wood), rustproof (if metal), or earthquake-proof (if stone) building.

Repairman of Judgement

Dominic has fewer Repairmen than any other Archangel besides Jordi. The two or three that do serve him apparently can see the flaws in any physical restraint or prison cell.

Repairman of Creation

Eli apparently didn’t give members of his Minor Choir currently serving the Host any special abilities besides their resonance. Only he knows what his hypothetical Repairmen of Creation can do.

Repairman of Fire

The items that Repairmen of Fire give away defend against the Cruel: anyone carrying or wearing one will be completely protected from the very next attack of Cruelty inflicted on them, whether physical, emotional or mental. However, a Cruel person who has one of these items will take (1-3) points of damage every time they attempt to maliciously hurt someone.

Repairman of the Wind

Repairmen of the Wind can, by spending 4 Essence, either reduce by half the amount of time it takes to fully repair a particular item or bump up the check digit on one resonance roll by 1.

Repairman of Lightning

These angels can 'repair' dead power cells and batteries: anything that they fix that requires electric power will end up with a full charge (if applicable). They also, if they spend 1 Essence, operate an electrical device without a visible power source for one minute.

Repairman of Animals

Jordi has one Repairman, who has the vessel of a beaver and is tasked with fixing structures and tools made by non-humans. He apparently automatically knows where such things are within a mile of his current location.

Repairman of Faith

Khalid gives his Repairmen a special Rite ("Trade clothes with a beggar or homeless person"), useable twice per day. The Archangel of Faith considers his Repairmen to be sentient expressions of the Fourth Pillar of Islam, and honors Eli for his creation of them.

Repairman of the Sword

The items that Repairmen of the Sword give away are attuned towards honor: those with honor get a +1 to all skills and rolls: those without honor get a -2. Either way, the effect lasts for about a day.

Repairman of Revelation / Repairman of Trade

The angel can, on a Perception roll, look at a person and know what item a person really needs. Unfortunately, the angel must acquire it for that person or suffer dissonance. Litheroy liked Marc's choice of Choir Attunement so much that he duplicated it.

Repairman of War

Michael loves these angels: they can make weapons maintenance so much easier. Repairmen of the War get a +2 to their check digits for any resonance rolls involving weaponry. It should also be noted that Michael offers one of the two most supportive environments for Repairmen wishing to create offspring - although other Archangels may follow suit fairly soon.

Repairman of Flowers

Novalis loves these angels: they can make helping the unfortunate so much easier. Repairmen of Flowers automatically recognize any mortal that truly needs a particular item more than they do. It should also be noted that Novalis offers one of the two most supportive environments for Repairmen wishing to create offspring - although other Archangels may follow suit fairly soon.

Repairman of Destiny

A Repairman of Yves will always know whether giving a Fixed item will substantially help a particular mortal achieve his Destiny, or Fate. Refusing to give an item that will substantially aid someone meeting her Fate isn't grounds for dissonance.

Repairman of Protection

Once per day, any repaired item that is given to a Needy person by this angel may act as a Talisman: Dodge for 24 hours. The first level of Dodge is free: additional levels cost 2 Essence (maximum of 6 Essence). The item must be carried or worn to have any effect.
