Lahatim

(The Searers)

Humans: oh, how they feel things. They love, they hate, they fear in ways I can't quite hope to duplicate. Luckily, I don't have to; what's important is that I help them reach inside themselves and let it all out. Some would say that I should be more careful about who I help. They don't understand that there's Fire trapped in all human hearts, and it has to come out. I don't serve humanity, or some insipid morality. I serve Fire.

By whatever means necessary.

Some Superiors create minor Choirs to aid them in their tasks: Belial has a somewhat more … direct … use for his.

What most entities don't realize about the Prince of Fire is that he suffers from Word-friction quite as much as his mirror image. Gabriel's existence is a throbbing splinter of dull pain in Belial's head: if it wasn't for her, he could concentrate on the finer things in life, like burning stuff over and over again. But no, she has to inspire, to foster creativity, to lift up humanity's spirits and souls. Just as his Word causes her to wrestle with the siren call of destruction, her Word is always whispering insidious, insipid ideals right in his ear.

When it gets too bad, Belial simply rips the alien ideas and urges out of his brain. Unfortunately, it amuses him to wrap a demon around them. Let Heaven see what their beliefs really mean…

Resonance

The resonance for a Lahatite is for obsession. They don’t call it that, of course: a Lahatite honestly believes that she's there to inspire people. They can detect people who are looking for something to believe in, and provide that something. Of course, by the time that they're done, this Fire lent by the demon usually consumes the human, but that's life for you. Many mortals along for the ride don't seem to actually mind too much, which is either horrific or very sad, depending on your point of view.

Dissonance

Fire is meant to consume. Once a Lahatite has chosen someone to inspire, that human must eventually sacrifice everything to his or her chosen obsession, or the demon suffers dissonance. The Lahatite may not abandon the human she is "blessing" with her presence either, again on pain of dissonance: obsession is a two-edged sword.

Manner and Appearance

Lahatim tend towards attractive vessels, but they're not very good at maintaining them. They tend to be bad at keeping their clothing and hair neat and tidy, too … and, of course, the eyes are usually a giveaway. Every Lahatite, no matter her vessel or Role, has wild eyes, crazy eyes, fanatical eyes. For some reason, these demons usually consider themselves female.

In their celestial form, Lahatim appear as winged humanoids made out of a spluttering, smoky flame. Their touch burns but causes no real damage. Their voices are the faintest whispers, but oddly soothing and seductive. They seem to deal best with Calabim and Shedim: Impudites dislike their habit of using humans up, and Habbalah consider Lahatim a mockery of their own, God-given tasks.

The greatest danger (or opportunity, depending on how you look at it) that any Lahatite can face is that she literally embodies inspiration: admittedly, inspiration as filtered through the insanity of a Demon Prince, but there's always a chance that the message isn't completely warped in transit. Sometimes, a Lahatite will learn to control their burning desires and actually help people to accomplish something … without destroying everything else in the process. These demons might just Redeem and become Hazim, Gabriel's minor Choir of visionaries and even (whisper it quietly) prophets. Of course, a Hazah that loses control of tempering her Fire will Fall and become a Lahatite, so symmetry is preserved.

Game Mechanics

A Lahatite must make physical contact of some sort to use her resonance on a human. Once she has done so, she must continue to interact with the target at least once per day. If she does not do so, the mortal may make a Will Roll once per day to shake off the effects, at a cumulative +2 for each day that the Lahatite has had no contact with him or her.

Resonance Check Digit Table

1). You know whether the subject has any serious tendencies towards fanaticism or obsessive behavior.

2). As above, plus you also know the level of fanaticism or obsession the subject would be capable of, under normal circumstances.

3). As above, and you also know the cause that would be most seductive to the target.

4). As above, and you can temporarily (for one day) force the subject to make a Will Roll or follow his or her most seductive obsession. The subject will ignore normal social restrictions (such as common politeness or etiquette), but won't actually break any laws.

5). As above, but the Will Roll is at -2, the duration is for a week, and the subject will ignore most laws. The subject will do anything to obey his or her obsession, sort of risking human lives.

6). The subject is completely in the grips of his or her most seductive obsession. Duration is indefinite (but note the above necessity for daily contact), and the subject will do anything to promote it, even at the cost of his or her life (or those of others).

More Sophisticated Uses of Resonance

Victims usually see Lahatim as a font of inspiration, even if they are not recognized as celestials. Someone successfully resonated by a Lahatite will react to them at +(the check digit/2, rounded up).

Searers of Fire

Lahatim have a bad reputation among the rest of Belial's Servitors, and they rarely last long. The stress of holding their personal Symphony together is hard for them, and they usually find a way to immolate themselves (along with some luckless human) in some grand gesture or scheme. The few that manage to achieve a basic stability quickly realize that they cannot hope for too much advancement in service to Fire: they do their best to seek a more openhanded master. Baal, Beleth, Kronos, Malphas and Vapula can sometimes find a use for a stable Lahatite.

Band Attunements

Note that many Band Attunements are designed to let Lahatim detect humans with a specific obsessive tendency without using their resonance. This has been found useful in keeping these demons functional for longer.

Lahatim of Nightmares

The demon may use her resonance on a sleeping human, visiting him or her in dreams and visions. While this human is under the demon's thrall, any attempt to shift the mortal's dreamscape to Blandine's side of the Marches has a penalty equal to the check digit of the Lahatim's latest resonance roll.

Lahatim of the War

Baal gets most Lahatim, and likes to use them to buttress dictatorial regimes. The demon can automatically detect mortals that could be potential religious or political fanatics. A Lahatite of the War is expected to encourage this in anyone she sees (not necessarily by using her resonance: sometimes, knowledge of human psychology is enough).

Lahatim of Fire

Belial wouldn't normally waste an Attunement on his unwanted creations: however, he's noticed that other Princes are getting useful work out of Lahatim. Lahatim of Fire thus automatically detect those who are already obsessed with something (although not the actual obsession), to the point of self-destruction.

Lahatim of Fate

Kronos assigns these demons to mortals whose obsessions and Fates are linked. The demon is not expected to use her resonance on these humans: instead, she instead instinctively recognizes those most likely to persuade her assignment to master his obsession. The Lahatite uses her resonance on these people, instead, leaving her assignment free to damn himself on his own.

Lahatim of Factions

A Searer of Factions has a +2 to any attempt to Fast-Talk any mortal into believing that others are jealous of his or her achievements or position.

Lahatim of Technology

The demon automatically recognizes mortals willing to pursue scientific or technological research, despite the cost.
