Adjutants

(Squires, Aides)

My boss was trying. Take that any way you will.

Right now, he was drowning in paperwork, and it was a shame to see someone who could lead troops in the field so well so stymied by a simple audit. Luckily, he had by now realized that my "advice" usually helped him out of the hole he was in, so I didn’t have any trouble keeping close as he dealt with the investigators. Six weeks of forms, checks, counter-checks and endless reports later, they were finally satisfied and went away. My boss even thanked me - privately, of course - for my help, and made sure that I got a nice quarterly proficiency report.

I hoped that he was as appreciative six months from now, when the tanks came over the hill, and his regiment was the only thing that would stand in their way long enough. Luckily for his country (and freedom in general), that was a problem he was capable of dealing with quite well without my help, providing that he wasn't reassigned before then because he couldn't add two and two without a calculator.

Of course, if he weren't a better soldier than bookkeeper, I wouldn't have been assigned with keeping him afloat until then…

Serving the Sword doesn't always mean that you have to wield one, metaphorically speaking. Some relievers prefer to concentrate on assisting others in their quest to rid the world of evil, taking quiet pride in ensuring that their more active brethren are fully prepared and supported. Those who show a flair for such work usually fledge as Adjutants. In many ways, they are the most selfless of angels, for their entire existence is caught up in supporting Laurence's (and other's) knight-errants.

Just bear in mind that this doesn't mean that an Adjutant has no abilities of his own. Quite the opposite, really.

Resonance

The resonance of an Adjutant is for support. They can boost the skills and Songs of anyone to whom they are currently attuned. Normally, the Adjutant and his attuned must both have a particular ability in order to transmit a bonus, but this is not quite a hard-and-fast rule. The Adjutant may have only one attuned at a time.

Dissonance

Adjutants, like Cherubim, are expected to put the needs of their attuned ahead of their own. It is dissonant of them to allow an attuned to come to harm, if there was something that the angel could have done to prevent it. This includes nonphysical dangers: Adjutants often find themselves trying to talk someone out of all sorts of harebrained ideas.

Manner and Appearance

Adjutants are very precise and neat with their corporeal vessels. They like to be attractive enough that people react well to them (it makes it easier to give advice), but not so good-looking that people won't take them seriously. Of course, in some cases an unattractive appearance (say, an elderly family retainer / career NCO) is more useful. Adjutants tend be fairly jumpy, and are noted for being free with their opinions (not necessarily vocally: these angels can pack a lot of information in a glance or frown).

In their celestial form, Adjutants appear as translucent humanoids with faint wings. Their facial features are indistinct, unless the angel has a current attuned. Adjutants with an attuned will take on features modeled on their charges. This can look very strange when the attuned is a Cherub or Kyriotate.

Every Adjutant has to fight the constant battle to assist someone while not trying not to completely run his or her life. It can be difficult, especially when the person you're helping is a complete idiot … or worse, incapable of heeding anyone else's advice. The temptation to just let your attuned go ahead and wreck everything can be strong: however, Adjutants who succumb to it are prime candidates to Fall. They become Sycophants; a minor Band much used by Andrealphus for their ability to entrap victims in a web of narcissistic, addictive complacency.

Adjutants, (not too surprisingly, given their creator), identify themselves with drums, bagpipes and bugles - instruments all associated with military rituals and maneuvers.

Game Mechanics

An Adjutant may only be attuned to one person at any given time. A successful resonance roll will keep them attuned for a week: any roll to renew the link is at +2. Range is line of sight. An Adjutant may attempt to break the link with a Will roll at -2: failure results in a point of dissonance, and the angel may not try again for a full hour. Attempting to break a link to a discovered demon or Hellsworn is at +4.

Resonance Check Digit Table

1. You have a reasonable idea of what the subject is capable of (the subject's Skills and Songs, but not any levels).

2. As above, and you can add +1 to any skill or Song roll made by the subject, as long as you also know it at level/1 (default rolls do not receive this bonus).

3. As above, and you can identify the Skill or Song that the subject knows best. You may boost any roll that the subject makes against this skill or Song by +2, provided that you know it as well (at level/2 or higher).

4. As above, except that you can boost all of the subject's skills and Songs by +2, provided that you know the relevant skill or Song at level/2 or higher.

5. As above, and the subject is an open book to you: you can determine his characteristics, skills, Songs, Attunements and Distinctions (if any), and can determine Discord/disadvantages with a Perception roll. This will effectively reveal the presence of a demon or Hellsworn. The subject will react to you at +1 (except for a Diabolical, of course): people often quite like others who seem to understand them so well…

6. As above, except that the bonus to skills is +3, which applies even to default rolls. The angel must know the skill or Song at a level equal to that of the bonus transmitted, however. Furthermore, the angel may at this level channel a Song through the subject (making it look as if it originated from him or her), by taking a -2 to the roll.

A Divine Intervention on the original roll not only gives the equivalent of a 6 on the table above, but also allows the angel to permanently boost the level of a Skill or Song (GM determination) known by the subject by one. This point is effectively free.

More Sophisticated Uses of Resonance

The angel may choose to boost the check digit by the appropriate amount instead of the skill roll: the player must state this before the roll is made. This will effect whether or not an Infernal Intervention is rolled, which is one reason why Adjutants don't do it all that often.

An Adjutant, thanks to his intimate knowledge of his subject, knows just what buttons to push. They get a bonus equal to one third of the resonance roll's check digit (round up) to their Detect Lies, Emote, Fast-Talk, Lying or Seduction skills, in regard to the subject only.

Adjutants in the Host

Adjutants are relative newcomers to Heaven, first being created by Laurence to help him work with those on Earth whose spirit was willing but whose flesh was weak. An Adjutant can insinuate him or herself into almost any earthly hierarchy, looking for those people who are in a position of authority that is beyond their actual abilities. They make perfect aides-de-camp for senile generals, confidential secretaries for overworked bosses, and reliable keepers for high-ranking idiots anywhere. As might be guessed, Adjutants tend towards eclecticism: while older ones may specialize, these angels need to have a wide skill base to be properly effective.

This Choir is mostly in Laurence's service (earthly military organizations, especially ones where rank was determined by money or social standing, needed all of these angels it could get). However, they not too uncommonly pop up in service to War (Michael was fairly insistent) or Trade (Marc was willing to pay through the nose to get some). Destiny, Children and Protection have a few, as well.

Adjutant of the Sword

These angels will always seem like they belong. They have the equivalent Military Role (aide to attuned)/3 at all times. This means also that people will treat them the same way that they would a legitimate aide to the attuned, which can be good or bad, depending on circumstances.

Adjutant of War

An Adjutant of War can cut any disturbance he makes in half. Michael usually uses them as backup for specialist Soldiers with weak combat skills (he does have Soldiers who aren’t good fighters. Quite a few, really: after all, sometimes you need a demolition man or a hacker on a commando raid…)

Adjutant of Trade

Marc always wants more of these angels. He gives them the ability to attune to a corporation or business: while so attuned, the angel may automatically choose a different recipient for their assistance once per day. Naturally, the new subject must be a legitimate employee of the company. Adjutants of Trade make excellent members of secretarial pools.

Adjutant of Destiny

Adjutants of Destiny always have the Divine Destiny Attunement, and are expected to wander around and help those in personal crisis points. The angel's successful aid will never count as interference when determining if someone has achieved his or her Destiny. Unsuccessful or counterproductive aid, on the other hand…

Adjutant of Protection

Zadkiel usually uses these angels to defend the old and infirm with a critical task or position. These angels may choose to boost characteristics (usually Intelligence or Will), instead of skills. This boost does not cause disturbance. The angel may only choose one characteristic to boost per week of resonance. Adjutants of Protection have also been known for their judicious use of the Corporeal Song of Entropy.

Adjutant of Children

Christopher likes using these angels as teachers to potential Soldiers. Adjutants of Children get a +2 reaction from humans, and can teach children at an accelerated rate. The angel may determine a specific skill, and if he or she spends a month attuned to the same child, at the end of the month the child will know that skill at level/1. Songs may only be taught in this manner if the child is already Symphonically aware, and the process takes three months. No Adjutant of Children has ever successfully managed to Fall and make it to Hell: they tend to get hunted down very, very quickly.
