Hi Doug Brown Fans!
My name is Marybeth Shipley, and I am a teacher at East
Elementary School in Cincinnati, Ohio. Throughout the
month of April and some of May, my fourth and fifth grade
students worked on a "Doug Brown Project". The
first step was for the students to complete the
"Doug Brown Website Scavenger Hunt". I created
a list of questions about Doug and his music based on
information that could be found on the website. The
students had to locate, look at and read the site to find
the answers to the questions. They enjoyed using the
computer to find out information about the musician.
The second step of the project had the students listening
and critiquing Doug's newest CD, Magna Nova. They loved
this activity! They all had different "favorite
songs" from the CD, but 'Get Up Get Out Get Down'
won hands down in our group. (My favorite is 'First
Sight').
During the next activity, students wrote letters to Doug
telling him what they liked about the website and the CD.
They asked him many questions as well. The kids were
really surprised when they received a lengthy hand
written letter back from Doug Brown! He sent a group
letter answering their questions and commenting on their
letters. He also enclosed an autographed picture for each
student. The students were excited that he took the time
to write each of their names on the pictures and then
sign each of them. The fact that Doug took the time from
his busy schedule to sit down and write a very lengthy
letter to some 4th graders really impressed me!
The last thing that the students did was to write thank
you letters back to Doug thanking him for the pictures
and the very nice letter. I sent my own letter of thanks
to Doug--he made a group of students extremely happy.
Sincerely, Marybeth Shipley |
