THE WHO
The Who will play three shows in small venues in England later this month as precursors to previously announced charity performances at London's Royal Albert Hall in February.
A summer North American tour is also in the works, reports Billboard.com. Guitarist Pete Townshend reveals on his official Web site that plans call for a three-leg tour -- likely beginning in Los Angeles in June and wrapping in Canada in August.
Prior to the Who's Feb. 7-8 London shows -- which will benefit the Teenage Cancer Trust -- the group will play Jan. 27-28 at the Guildhall in Portsmouth, England. Details about a third show have not yet been finalized.
Townshend recently told the San Diego Union-Tribune that he'd "made a very real commitment now to go into the studio with the Who at the end of October of 2002, with a producer and a record deal, and to put out whatever we come up with, even if it's rubbish." The group has not recorded together since 1982's "It's Hard," which featured the No. 28 Hot 100 hit "Athena."

PINK FLOYD
Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour is donating the proceeds from the sale of his London house to charity.
A London newspaper, the Sunday Telegraph, reports Gilmour sold the home to Earl Spencer, brother of the late Princess Diana, for $6.48 million and gave the money to Crisis, which helps homeless people.
"I don't need the money and I just thought it would be a good thing to do," the newspaper quotes him as saying. "I've had that house for nearly 20 years. It's made a fat profit and I've scarcely used it for the last six or seven years."
Gilmour, 54, lives in a farmhouse in West Sussex, England, and owns a house in Greece. He's a regular donor to Crisis through his foundation, the DG Charitable Trust.
The Independent quotes a Crisis spokesman saying the group hasn't gotten final confirmation of the gift but was in talks with Gilmour.

The Good Friday concert is being produced by Play-Tone, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman's production company, and plans call for filming the event.

ADAM ANT
Adam Ant has been committed to a London psychiatric hospital after a bizarre bar row.
SonicNet.com reports the 1980s new wave singer -- whose real name is Stuart Goddard -- was arrested last Saturday night at the Prince of Wales pub in North London after getting into a fight and allegedly brandishing a fake gun. He faces weapons, criminal damage and assault charges, according to police.
The next day, police said, officials received calls from several of Ant's friends and family members, who said they feared for the 47-year-old singer's safety. The cops then picked up Ant, who suffers from manic depression. He was detained under the Mental Health Act at London's Royal Free Hospital, a hospital spokesperson said. Under British law, Ant can be detained for up to 28 days.
A statement on Ant's Web site said the singer "is not suicidal, however family and friends are concerned that Adam (was) not receiving the care that he requires, and they do not wish to see him become a potential threat to himself."
Ant is still scheduled to kick off his "Here and Now" tour with Spandau Ballet in April.

DIDO
The Official U.K. Charts Company has revoked Dido's Brit Award nomination for Best Newcomer because the singer, who was nominated for a Brit last year, didn't meet the new artist eligibility requirements.
RollingStone.com quotes a statement from the Brit Awards saying, "Under the eligibility rules for the Brit Awards 2002, (Dido) should have not appeared as a contender and therefore it has been decided by the Executive Producer that from today Dido will be withdrawn from this category and replaced by the next eligible artist, Tom McRae."
Dido was unfazed by the news, calling the incident "quite funny" in an interview with the BBC's Radio 1. She's nominated for three other 2002 Brit Awards -- Best British Album (for "No Angel"), Best British Video (for "Thank You") and Best British Female Solo Artist.
The Brit Awards are scheduled for Feb. 20 in London.

"I live in the real world on the road, where you can hit flat notes and audiences are pretty forgiving. You don't have to beat a song to death."

MICHAEL JACKSON
Michael Jackson will be on the American Music Awards after all -- he just won't be performing.
The pop star had agreed to sing at the AMAs but then pulled out of the show last month, angering producer Dick Clark enough to sue Recording Academy President and CEO Michael Greene for $10 million -- alleging that Greene's policy of refusing to book artists who perform at the AMAs for the Recording Academy's Grammy Awards forced Jackson to back out of his agreement with Clark.
MTV News reports that while Jackson will now appear on the AMAs to accept his Artist of the Century Award, Clark is still going forward with his lawsuit, filed last month in Los Angeles. "This doesn't affect the lawsuit because it doesn't address (Greene's) policy of interference, and Jackson is still not performing (on the AMAs)," Clark's lawyer, Greg Aldisert, explained.
Jackson joins a line-up of performers and presenters that includes Britney Spears, 'N Sync, Shaggy and Cher. The 29th annual American Music Awards will be handed out next Wednesday at the Shrine Auditorium in LA, in ceremonies airing live on ABC.
Meanwhile, the nominees for the 44th annual Grammy Awards will be announced Friday. The awards will be presented Feb. 27 at the Staples Center in LA, and the event will air on CBS.

BSB'S NICK CARTER
Backstreet Boy Nick Carter is due in court March 4 after being arrested early Wednesday morning for allegedly disobeying police orders to leave a Tampa nightclub.
E! Online reports the blond, 21-year-old singer -- and youngest member of the boy group -- was charged with a misdemeanor count of resisting or opposing a law enforcement officer without violence. Carter was handcuffed and placed in a squad car, but was later released on his own recognizance, police said.
The arrest took place at the Pop City nightclub after police broke up a fight and were shooing onlookers away. An eyewitness tells The Smoking Gun Web site that Carter broke into tears after being cuffed, telling officers, "I've never been arrested. I don't know what to do!"
No comment yet from the Backstreet Boys' management or publicist.
Up until now, the only Backstreet Boy making tabloid headlines was the group's "official" bad boy, A.J. McLean, the tattooed Backstreeter who in July checked himself into rehab for alcohol abuse and depression. The group was forced to postpone its U.S. and Canadian tour twice, but the 24-year-old singer returned to the group in August.

GEORGE HARRISON
Proceeds from the British re-release of George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" will go to the Material World Charitable Foundation, which aids charities around the world that work with children and the poor.

He added that guitarist Jeff Beck has called Murphy "his absolute favorite guitar player."

The CD features some of the top names in the gospel world, including B.B. Jay and T-Bone. "Come To The Temple" features shout outs from Fat Joe, Rampage and Greg Nice. And the song "Tears" is dedicated to the lives that were lost on Sept. 11.
