The National Institutes of Health (NIH), located in Bethesda, MD, conduct extensive, cutting-edge medical research. Volunteers are typically paid for participating in NIH studies.

Most studies utilize two types of participants:

people who have the problem that is under investigation (e.g., diabetes, depression)
[such persons are called "patients" on the linked patient recruitment page]
people who do not have the problem that is under investigation, and who therefore serve as a comparison group
[such persons are called "healthy volunteers" on the linked patient recruitment page]
