I was born on May 1, 1950 in Vancouver, BC.

As a kid I was fascinated by thekiddie science fiction shown by the CBC on CBUT02-Vancouver. On the weekday afternoons after school were the Gerry and Sylvia Anderson shows Supercar (1961) and Fireball XL 5 (1962). On Sunday afternoons were the first B&W (William Hartnell) Doctor Who shows from the very beginning (1963). Doctor Who lead me to watch Coronation Street on earlier on Sunday.

CBUT02 was one of the regional CBC stations to show Coronation Street from the beginning. It was not shown nationally. The shows would start and stop according to what was available to them. I watched them off and on but not every show. The first colour transmission in the UK was October 29, 1969. The last set ended well into the colour shows. I remember phoning CBUT02 wanting more.

I was glad that the CBC started showing them Monday to Friday in one hour blocks from the first colour show to catch up to the UK. Five hours a week to the one hour a week in the UK. Since this was before VCRs I installed an ear phone jack into the TV. I used an appliance timer and a reel to reel recorder to record the audio. Too bad I did not keep the recordings. I watched steadily since the Feb 1974 (UK date) show when Cyril Turpin (Betty T's policeman husband) died. I looked in the Sunday UK newspapers air freighted to Vancouver weekly for news. I can confirm that the Tuesday October 1, 1985 CBC shows were the Monday January 16 and Wednesday January 18, 1984 UK shows.

To update the 25th anniversary (1985) book I made detailed notes since the 041486 (UK)/070786 (CBC) show when Gloria Todd's exboyfriend Steve Holt visited her. Notes now 1000+ pages, 8 1/2 x 11 inches. Graham Allsopp of corrie.net has photocopies of the first 450 pages to January 1995 (when Glenda Young started her weekly updates).

When Derek and Mavis were in Vancouver in 1997 I had Mavis sign the page noting their marriage and Derek signed the one noting his death.
